Commercial Cargo & Freight to South Africa
Commercial cargo and freight from the UAE to South Africa — sea and air freight, South African customs, and inland delivery to Johannesburg and Gauteng coordinated from start to finish.
The UAE–South Africa freight corridor is a sea-dominated route. For bulk commercial cargo — equipment, stock, materials — sea freight from Jebel Ali is the practical and cost-effective backbone, with direct transit to Durban running around 22 to 28 days. Air freight on the eight-hour DXB–JNB direct handles the time-critical. Getting either right means accurate documentation, correct SARS tariff classification, and a clear plan for what happens after the port — because for cargo headed to Johannesburg or Gauteng, the port of Durban is not the end of the journey.
Sea freight to South Africa: FCL and LCL
Most commercial cargo from the UAE to South Africa travels by sea, either in a full container (FCL) or as part of a consolidated load (LCL). FCL is the obvious choice where you have container-load volume and want exclusive routing and faster clearance at Durban. LCL is the right call for partial loads — we consolidate with other UAE-origin cargo bound for the same South African port and you pay for the cubic metres you actually ship.
We route shipments to the port closest to the final delivery address — Durban for the east coast and Gauteng-bound cargo, Cape Town for the Western Cape. The Durban-to-Johannesburg inland run — roughly 600 kilometres on the N3 highway — is one of the busiest commercial freight routes in southern Africa. It is well-established and reliable, but it adds time and cost that needs to be in your quote from day one, not discovered at the port.
SARS customs: DA 304, tariff codes and 15% VAT
Import clearance into South Africa runs through the South African Revenue Service (SARS). For commercial cargo, accurate tariff classification on the SAD 500 bill of entry is the central document, and the receiving entity needs a SARS Importer Code (the IT number) registered before the goods arrive. Standard VAT is 15 per cent and applies to most imports; duty is tariff-code dependent. For unaccompanied personal effects shipped alongside commercial cargo — on a relocation that has both — the DA 304 form covers the personal element. Where the UAE-origin goods qualify under SACU preferential origin arrangements, we present the correct certificate of origin to claim the preferential rate.
Packing, ISPM-15 and bonded warehousing
Wood packaging entering South Africa must comply with ISPM-15: heat-treated or fumigated and stamped accordingly. We palletise to ISPM-15 standard at the Dubai warehouse, so the cargo lands at Durban without the delay that non-compliant packaging triggers. For consignments that need to be held before clearance — sequenced launches, deferred VAT planning, or staged delivery into a Gauteng site — we have access to bonded warehousing at Durban so the cargo can sit under bond until you are ready for it to clear.
Air freight to South Africa
For cargo that cannot wait on a sea schedule — time-sensitive parts, high-value goods, urgent consignments — air freight to O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg or Cape Town International is the option. Emirates SkyCargo and the Doha-routed alternatives both offer reliable belly-hold and freighter capacity out of DXB. We coordinate air cargo clearance and onward delivery from the airport.

How a commercial shipment runs
- Brief us. What is shipping, its dimensions, weight and value, the final delivery address in South Africa, the receiving entity’s SARS Importer Code, and the delivery window.
- Quote and route. We return a clear quote with the freight mode, port routing, inland leg if applicable, customs treatment and a realistic start-to-finish timeline.
- Book, pack and document. Freight space is booked at Jebel Ali, cargo collected, packed to ISPM-15 where wood is involved, and SARS documentation prepared before the shipment leaves the UAE.
- Monitor to delivery. Your coordinator tracks the shipment through Durban or Cape Town clearance, the N3 inland leg and final delivery, and confirms arrival.
Whether it is a single consignment or recurring freight into South Africa, the inland delivery question needs an answer in the plan. Request a freight quote and we will build it in from the start.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to South Africa take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
