That is not an exaggeration designed to alarm — it is the honest starting point for planning a pet move to New Zealand, and it has to be. The country’s biosecurity framework exists to protect an ecosystem that evolved without the diseases and parasites common elsewhere, and the consequences of a breach are taken extremely seriously by MPI. Pet relocation to New Zealand

New Zealand permits the import of cats and dogs from approved countries under strict conditions. The UAE is a Category C country under New Zealand’s animal import framework, which means that pets originating from or transiting through the UAE face a specific set of pre-export requirements and a mandatory quarantine period on arrival in New Zealand — regardless of how healthy the animal is.

The timeline for a UAE–New Zealand pet move is typically a minimum of several months when pre-export preparations, testing and documentation are included. This is not a process that can be compressed significantly. The key steps include:

• Microchipping to ISO standard (if not already done)
• Rabies vaccination and, in some cases, rabies titre (blood) testing
• A waiting period after the titre test before travel is permitted
• Treatment for internal and external parasites within a specified window before departure
• A New Zealand-format health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian
• Mandatory quarantine on arrival in New Zealand — typically a minimum of ten days in an MPI-approved transitional facility for cats and dogs from Category C origins, longer where compliance gaps require additional testing

For species other than cats and dogs — birds, rabbits, reptiles — the rules are far more restrictive and in many cases prohibitive; we walk through species-specific feasibility at the first conversation rather than at the end of a long, expensive preparation. New Zealand does not accept cats or dogs from rabies-endemic countries without the specific Category C protocol completed in full; the rabies-free status of New Zealand itself is the reason the regime is structured this way.

Vehicle import to New Zealand

Vehicles imported into New Zealand face biosecurity inspection as well as standard customs clearance. MPI inspects the undercarriage, wheel wells, engine bay and any soil-contacting surfaces for organic material — soil, seeds, insects, plant matter. A vehicle that arrives with soil contamination is treated before release, at the owner’s cost, and may be held until MPI is satisfied. Cleaning the vehicle thoroughly in the UAE — including the undercarriage — before shipping is not optional; it is the practical step that avoids a costly hold in Auckland.

Beyond biosecurity, New Zealand vehicles must meet NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency) entry requirements, and left-hand-drive vehicles face additional compliance steps. We advise on this before the vehicle is committed to shipping.

NZTA compliance: the on-road pathway

Getting a vehicle off the ship is one thing; getting it legally on New Zealand roads is another, and the two are not the same process. NZTA entry certification confirms that the vehicle meets New Zealand’s frontal-impact safety standard and the broader Approved Vehicle Standards. Most vehicles built to UAE GCC specification require additional checking and, in some cases, modification to meet the entry standard — particularly for frontal impact, seat-belt anchorages and emissions where the GCC standard differs from the NZ baseline.
