Getting the pet there from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, though, requires meeting EU entry requirements precisely, and the Dutch are thorough in applying them. Vehicles face a different set of considerations: EU import duties, Dutch BPM tax, RDW inspection and registration. Both are very manageable when planned correctly; both become problems when left until the week before the move.

Pet relocation: EU entry from a third country

For animals arriving in the Netherlands from the UAE — classified as a third country under EU rules — the entry sequence is structured and non-negotiable. The animal must be microchipped first (ISO 11784/11785-compliant); the rabies vaccination must be administered after the microchip is in place; a rabies antibody titre test (drawn at least thirty days after vaccination and at an EU-approved laboratory) must show an adequate result; and a three-month waiting period from the date of that successful titre must elapse before EU entry. An EU Animal Health Certificate, issued by an official UAE veterinarian within ten days of travel, accompanies the animal. On arrival at Schiphol or another EU border-inspection post, the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) inspects the documentation and the animal. The sequence matters — you cannot shortcut it by doing steps out of order or compressing the waiting periods, and a failed titre means starting parts of the timeline over.

Once in the Netherlands, dog owners register with the gemeente; some Dutch municipalities still charge hondenbelasting (a dog tax) and almost all run a registration system. Vehicle shipping to the Netherlands

Moving a car or motorcycle from the UAE to the Netherlands is a sea-freight exercise — container or RoRo vehicle carrier from Jebel Ali into Rotterdam, with UAE export and Dutch / EU import documentation. On arrival, Dutch vehicle import involves several stages handled in sequence:

• Customs duty and 21% BTW on the customs value of the vehicle, paid at clearance into free circulation
• BPM — Belasting van personenauto’s en motorrijwielen, the Dutch private vehicle and motorcycle tax based on CO₂ emissions; declared to the Belastingdienst and paid before the vehicle can be registered. Personal-import vehicles owned and used abroad for six months or more can sometimes qualify for relief, but the application is technical
• RDW inspection — the Dutch road authority physically inspects the vehicle for identity, condition and compliance with Dutch and EU technical standards. UAE-spec vehicles sometimes need modification (lighting, glazing, emissions equipment) to pass
• Registration — once BPM is settled and RDW clears the vehicle, kenteken (number plates) are issued and the vehicle can be driven on Dutch roads
• APK — the Dutch periodic roadworthiness test (equivalent to a UK MOT), first required at four years for new vehicles and annually after specified ages
