Moving to the Netherlands

Employee Relocation to the Netherlands

Employee relocation from the UAE to the Netherlands, managed for HR and mobility teams — expat-aware, policy-aligned and consistent across every move.

The Netherlands hosts one of the largest expat populations in Europe relative to its size — and a significant proportion of them arrived through corporate relocation from the Middle East. HR and mobility teams managing moves on this corridor are not navigating unfamiliar territory: the Dutch system is well set up for international arrivals, the language barrier is rarely significant, and the practical infrastructure exists. The challenge is making the move itself consistent, compliant and manageable as a programme. That is what Seemleius employee relocation from the UAE to the Netherlands is built for.

The Dutch tax and immigration framework employees actually feel

Two parts of the Dutch system shape how a relocation lands. The first is the 30% ruling — a tax facility that allows up to 30% of an eligible employee’s gross salary to be treated as a tax-free allowance for qualifying scarce-skill or specialist hires sponsored by a Dutch employer, subject to current salary thresholds and the latest Belastingdienst phase-down rules. It matters because for most UAE arrivals the 30% ruling is the single biggest variable in their net Dutch pay, and the application has to be filed within a defined window of arrival. The second is the Kennismigrantenregeling (Highly Skilled Migrant scheme): the IND-administered residence and work permit route most UAE white-collar employees enter through, requiring an IND-recognised sponsor on the employer side. We do not file these — that is the employer’s immigration adviser’s job — but we time the shipment, the IND appointment and the gemeente registration so the sequence does not strand the employee.

What the programme covers

Policy-aligned moves

Every Netherlands relocation runs to your mobility policy — weight allowance, lump-sum versus managed, sea or air default — without requiring HR to manage the detail on each one.

Jebel Ali to Rotterdam

Employees benefit from the corridor’s genuine sea-freight strength — twenty to twenty-five day direct rotations and the fastest landside clearance of any EU port, keeping sea practical even on tighter timelines.

Verhuisboedel per employee

Dutch transfer-of-residence relief filed at Douane for each employee — Form 0350 paperwork and supporting evidence prepared so qualifying goods clear without 21% BTW or duty.

Status reporting

Consistent documentation and move-status reporting across all active Netherlands relocations, so HR always knows where each employee’s shipment stands.

The first month: what employees actually do on arrival

New residents in the Netherlands register with their gemeente within five working days of arrival for any stay of more than four months. The BSN (Burgerservicenummer) that comes from that registration is needed for almost everything: opening a Dutch bank account, taking out compulsory zorgverzekering health insurance, signing a mobile contract, signing a residential lease in their own name and being put onto Dutch payroll. Confirmed housing from day one is therefore important — the gemeente needs an address — and we raise this in the planning conversation with each employee so they arrive knowing what to do first. The Dutch housing market is the other operational factor: Amsterdam itself is tight and prices have climbed, so many programmes either set realistic expectations on housing allowances or steer employees toward the commuter belt — Amstelveen, Haarlem, Leiden, Hilversum, Utrecht — from which the train into the city is fast and dependable. For employees with families, international-school enrolment cycles run on a Dutch academic calendar (term starts late August / early September) and the international schools in Amsterdam and The Hague carry waiting lists, so school placement often dictates the move date more than the office start date does.

How the programme works

  1. Align the programme. We map to your mobility policy once — entitlements, documentation standards, reporting format, sea-versus-air defaults, verhuisboedel handling — and every Netherlands move runs to those rules from that point forward.
  2. Initiate a move. HR refers the employee; we survey, prepare the Dutch Douane file (including Form 0350 verhuisboedel where applicable) and return a policy-checked quote.
  3. Manage the relocation. Packing in the UAE, sea via Jebel Ali to Rotterdam or air via DXB to Schiphol, EU import clearance and delivery to the employee’s Dutch address are coordinated start-to-finish, with HR updated at each milestone.
  4. Report. Consistent documentation and status reporting, every time, across every move in the programme — so reviewing the programme at year-end is straightforward rather than archaeological.

Whether you are moving a handful of employees to Amsterdam each year or running a sustained programme for a business with a significant Dutch presence, the service is built to scale. Talk to us and we will set the programme up to run cleanly from the first move.

Contact us
How long does a move to the Netherlands take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
