Malta applies the EU’s third-country pet entry rules. For an animal travelling from the UAE — a third country in EU terminology — the requirements are detailed and strictly enforced, and several steps carry fixed waiting periods that simply cannot be shortened. Miss a step or get the sequence wrong, and the animal cannot enter at the Maltese border. There is no negotiating it on the day.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Malta is: an ISO-compliant microchip implanted first, a primary rabies vaccination administered after the chip is in place — never before — a rabies antibody (FAVN titer) blood test taken at an EU-approved laboratory at least thirty days after that vaccination, and then a mandatory three-month wait from the date of the qualifying blood draw before the animal may enter the EU. An EU Animal Health Certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian within ten days of travel, and the animal must arrive in Malta through the designated point of entry, where the documentation is checked. Malta is historically rabies-free and takes these controls seriously, so the paperwork is examined properly on arrival.

Because Malta is an island, the practical route is by air into Malta International Airport, and the animal travels as manifested cargo or accompanied baggage depending on size, breed and airline policy. We plan the route alongside the medical timeline so the two line up.

Vehicle shipping to Malta

Shipping a car from the UAE to Malta involves considerably more than the freight itself. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, Maltese vehicle registration, a roadworthiness inspection and the local registration tax to account for. We handle the logistics chain and make sure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward from the outset about the duty, tax and inspection costs so there are no surprises waiting on arrival. One point worth raising early: Malta drives on the left, so a UAE vehicle — left-hand drive and configured for right-side traffic — is usable but worth a candid conversation before you commit to shipping it.

The treatment of the vehicle at Maltese customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle that the owner has owned and used — as a general rule for at least six months before the move — and which the owner will continue to use in Malta can usually be imported under that relief and exempted from EU import duty and Maltese VAT. The same relief claim that covers the household effects covers the vehicle. Without it, duty and VAT are payable on the assessed customs value.

Once cleared, the vehicle is brought into the Maltese system: it must pass a roadworthiness test (the VRT inspection), the registration tax is assessed by Transport Malta — calculated with reference to the vehicle’s value, age and emissions — and the car is then registered, plated and insured before it is road-legal.
