Malta is small enough to cross in an hour and connected enough to run a European business from, and a UAE move there turns on one fact above all others: it is an island. Nothing reaches it by road. Your household sails into the Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk or flies into Luqa, and from the quay it is a short run to a flat in Sliema, an office address in St Julian’s, a townhouse in Valletta or a quieter place across the channel on Gozo. We have been routing UAE–Malta shipments on the Central-Med run for 22 years, and the corridor still behaves the way a well-planned one should.

The people we move along it fall into a few familiar shapes. An iGaming or fintech specialist taking a desk in the St Julian’s and Sliema cluster. A financial-services or yachting professional drawn by Malta’s position in the Mediterranean and by the fact that English is an official language here, which removes a great deal of friction for anyone arriving from the Gulf. A family applying under one of Malta’s residence-by-investment programmes, timing the container against the housing they have to secure. Each reads differently on paper; the route underneath is the same, and after 1,213 moves we know where it bends.

Transfer-of-residence relief, prepared early

Used personal effects owned and used for six months or more clear free of import duty and Maltese VAT under EU transfer-of-residence relief. We build the dossier — inventory, residence evidence, eResidence application — before the box leaves Jebel Ali, so the relief is granted on first reading.

An island where yard space is finite

Marsaxlokk is a working transhipment hub, not a storage yard. A held container costs real money and real days. We make sure the declared values, the inventory and the paperwork agree exactly with what is packed, so Maltese Customs has nothing to query.

One coordinator, both ends

The coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator owns your file from the UAE survey to the Maltese doorstep, including the Gozo ferry leg where it applies. No handover gap between vendors, no detail lost in translation between the Dubai office and the island.

  1. Survey and brief

A survey in the UAE or a video walk-through, volume measured in cubic metres, and anything that changes customs treatment flagged early. Sea and air options come back priced against your start date in Malta and the address you are moving into.

  2. Documentation before sail

The import declaration, the transfer-of-residence relief claim and the supporting evidence are drawn up and checked while the shipment is still in the UAE. Where a vehicle is travelling, the VRT and roadworthiness route through Transport Malta is mapped in.

  3. Export pack and dispatch

Export-standard packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, with a complete inventory built as the crew works. Booked onto a Central-Med rotation from Jebel Ali to Marsaxlokk, or air from DXB to Luqa when the schedule is tight.

  4. Clearance and delivery

EU import clearance at the Maltese point of entry, relief applied, the container devanned and trucked to your address. The crew unpacks, reassembles and clears the debris on the same visit, ferry crossing to Gozo included where the delivery needs it.

The UAE–Malta corridor in detail

Valletta, Marsaxlokk and the air route

Sea freight is the sensible choice for a full household. A container leaves Jebel Ali on the Central-Med run and reaches the Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk in roughly 10 to 14 days, frequently via a transhipment hub rather than as a single direct call, since Marsaxlokk is itself one of the Mediterranean’s busiest transhipment ports. That is where the boxes land and clear; Valletta’s Grand Harbour handles passenger and cruise traffic and the historic-city deliveries that follow, where narrow streets and limited vehicle access need their own planning. Air runs DXB to Malta International at Luqa and is the faster answer when the timeline is short, usually on a connection through a European hub rather than a daily direct widebody freighter. Most moves go by sea, with a small priority air consignment bridging the first weeks where it earns its place.

Maltese Customs and transfer of residence

Malta clears within the EU customs framework, so clearing into Malta clears your goods into the wider single market — useful if onward movement to mainland Europe is part of the plan. The working relief for an arriving resident is the EU transfer-of-residence exemption: used personal and household effects owned and used for at least six months come in free of import duty and Maltese VAT, provided the owner is genuinely transferring their normal residence to Malta. The claim is granted against documentation — a consistent inventory, evidence of the move such as an eResidence application or card or a Maltese residence registration, and an employment contract or programme approval where relevant. New goods still in their boxes, commercial stock and items outside the ownership window are assessed in the ordinary way. We assemble and reconcile all of it before the shipment sails, because on this corridor the paperwork is what moves the container.

Used cars, VRT and driving on the left

Importing a used car into Malta is genuinely viable from the UAE, and one detail makes it more so than for most European destinations: Malta drives on the left, while the UAE drives on the right — so a Gulf-specification, right-hand-drive car suits Maltese roads rather than fighting them. A used car is not covered by transfer-of-residence relief the way personal effects are; it routes through Transport Malta, which levies the vehicle registration tax (VRT) and requires a roadworthiness check, the VRT test, before the car can be registered and plated. The tax is assessed on value, age and emissions, so the figure varies and is worth confirming in advance. We map the VRT and test sequence into the schedule so the car is not sitting at the port while registration catches up.

Pets, residence-by-investment timing and what stays behind

Pets travel under the EU scheme: an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given after the chip with the required waiting period observed, and an EU pet passport or equivalent health certification from an official UAE vet. We coordinate the flight booking and the handover to a specialist animal-handling agent at Luqa.

Where a family is arriving under one of Malta’s residence-by-investment or citizenship-by-investment programmes, the move runs on the programme’s clock. Approvals, due-diligence stages and the residence card all carry their own timing, and the relief claim leans on that evidence. We sequence the shipment so it lands when there is a residence address and the documentation to support the relief — not before. A few categories never travel: firearms and regulated weapons without proper Maltese licensing, hazardous goods, fresh produce and plants without phytosanitary clearance, and large quantities of alcohol or new boxed electronics that read as commercial. We flag these at survey so nothing turns up at Marsaxlokk that should have stayed in Dubai.

Where in Malta we deliver, and pricing

Valletta for the historic core and its limited-access streets; Sliema and St Julian’s for the seafront residential and the finance, fintech and iGaming cluster; and Gozo across the channel for anyone choosing the quieter island, where the ferry leg is built into the schedule rather than treated as an afterthought. Pricing builds from volume, freight mode, the customs treatment that applies, any vehicle on the move, and the access at the delivery address — a Valletta townhouse and a modern Sliema apartment are not the same job. Every quote itemises freight, customs, haulage, packing and insurance, so each part is visible rather than buried in a single figure.

Corporate transferee

Dubai Marina to a St Julian’s iGaming desk

A product lead joining a gaming operator in the St Julian’s cluster, with a start date that could not slip. The coordinator split the move — a priority air consignment to Luqa for the working essentials, a sea container behind it to Marsaxlokk for the rest of the apartment — and ran both under one transfer-of-residence claim with matching inventory references. The desk was furnished the week the contract began.

Residence by investment

Abu Dhabi family to a Sliema apartment

A family of four arriving under a Maltese residence-by-investment programme, the container timed to the programme approval rather than the calendar. The coordinator held the shipment in the UAE until the eResidence evidence was in hand, then landed it at Marsaxlokk against a confirmed Sliema address. Relief granted first time, no demurrage, the apartment lived in before the school term.

Yachting and commercial

Yachting professional and equipment to Gozo

A marine professional relocating to Malta’s yachting sector, moving a household plus a crate of specialist rigging and tools to a base on Gozo. The coordinator separated the commercial equipment from the personal effects on the declaration, cleared each on the correct footing, and built the Gozo ferry crossing into the final delivery leg so everything arrived in one coordinated run.

★★★★★

We moved a four-bedroom from Dubai into a smaller Sliema apartment, so the coordinator told us plainly what would not fit before we shipped rather than after. The container cleared Marsaxlokk without a single query, the transfer-of-residence relief went through on the first pass, and the crew had us unpacked over a weekend. Calm, accurate, no drama.

★★★★★

I took a fintech role in St Julian’s and needed to be working before the sea shipment could possibly arrive. The coordinator put a small air consignment into Luqa for the things I could not do without and sent the rest by sea, all under one customs file. The inventory matched across both. I have moved countries three times and this was the one that did not keep me awake.

The household side was handled well and the Gozo ferry leg was managed without fuss. Bringing my car over took longer than I had pictured — the VRT and the roadworthiness test added a couple of weeks at the Malta end. To be fair, the coordinator had warned me it might, and she stayed on top of Transport Malta until the plates came through. Honest about the bit that was slow.

Frequently asked questions — Malta corridor

What is transfer-of-residence relief and do I qualify?

It is the EU relief that brings used personal and household effects into Malta free of import duty and Maltese VAT. You qualify where the goods have been owned and used for at least six months, and you are genuinely transferring your normal residence to Malta. It is granted against documentation — a consistent inventory and evidence of the move such as an eResidence application or card.

Does my shipment land at Valletta or Marsaxlokk?

Container freight clears through the Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk, the island’s cargo and transhipment port. Valletta’s Grand Harbour is for passenger, cruise and the historic-city deliveries that follow. We plan the onward leg from Marsaxlokk to your address, whichever locality that is.

How does Maltese Customs handle a household move?

Within the EU framework, and pragmatically, provided the file is accurate. The declared values, the inventory and the supporting evidence all have to agree with what is in the container. We reconcile the declaration before the shipment sails so there is nothing for the customs desk to question on the day.

Can I bring my UAE car, and what is VRT?

Yes, and Malta is one of the more sensible European destinations for it because both Malta and the UAE allow right-hand-drive cars on the road — Malta drives on the left. The car routes through Transport Malta, which charges the vehicle registration tax (VRT) based on value, age and emissions, and requires a roadworthiness check, the VRT test, before registration. We build that sequence into the schedule.

How does a residence-by-investment move affect timing?

The programme sets the pace. Approval, due diligence and the residence card each carry their own timing, and the relief claim relies on that evidence. We hold the shipment until there is a residence address and the documentation to support the relief, then land it — rather than landing a container that waits at the port.

How do pets travel to Malta?

Under the EU scheme: an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given after the chip with the required waiting period, and an EU pet passport or equivalent health certification from an official UAE vet. We arrange the flight and the handover to a specialist animal-handling agent at Luqa.

What will not ship?

Firearms and regulated weapons without proper Maltese licensing, hazardous goods, fresh produce and plants without phytosanitary clearance, and large quantities of alcohol or new boxed electronics that read as commercial rather than personal. We flag anything in this group at the survey stage.

How long does the whole move take?

Sea from Jebel Ali to Marsaxlokk is roughly 10 to 14 days on the water, then clearance and onward delivery on the island. Air to Luqa is faster for a priority consignment. Booking four to six weeks ahead of dispatch gives the relief file the room it needs to be right.

Who handles the Maltese end?

The same coordinator who started your file in the UAE — the coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator — works it through clearance, customs and delivery, with a local clearing and delivery crew on the island. There is no point where the move is handed to a stranger.
