Latvia sits at a logistically valuable point on the map — an EU member with Baltic Sea ports, a land bridge between the Nordic countries and Central Europe, and a customs administration that runs to clear EU rules. For UAE businesses moving commercial cargo into Latvia, that combination is an opportunity, but only if the freight is classified correctly and the documentation is complete before it sails. Cargo that reaches the Port of Riga with a gap in its paperwork waits; cargo that arrives with a clean file clears. Seemleius commercial cargo and freight on the UAE–Latvia corridor is built around getting that file right the first time.
The UAE–Latvia freight corridor
We arrange and coordinate sea and air freight from the UAE into Latvia for commercial stock, equipment, industrial goods, consolidated consignments and full containers. Sea freight from Jebel Ali into the Port of Riga or Ventspils is the cost-effective route for larger volumes; because the Baltic Sea routing runs through the North Sea and often involves transhipment at a Northern European hub, realistic transit times fall in the range of four to six weeks. Air freight from DXB into Riga International Airport (RIX) — the main air cargo hub of the Baltic states — is the option for time-sensitive consignments. Latvia’s status as an EU point of entry is a genuine advantage: clearing customs in Riga clears the goods into the whole EU, simplifying onward distribution into Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and the Nordic markets.
Sea freight
Cost-effective for larger volumes and bulk commercial consignments — full container or consolidated loads via Jebel Ali to the Port of Riga or Ventspils, with bonded warehousing available if onward clearance is staged.
Air freight
For time-sensitive commercial cargo — high-value goods, urgent equipment or consignments that cannot wait on Baltic sea transit times — direct DXB to Riga (RIX).
Latvian customs & EORI
EU import documentation prepared and submitted to Latvian customs — HS classification, EORI registration, valuation and supporting records done properly the first time.
Onward road delivery
From the Latvian port or airport to the final commercial address — anywhere in Latvia, or onward into the wider EU under T1/T2 transit where required.
Latvian customs, EORI and import VAT
Latvian customs operates within the EU Union Customs Code, and all commercial import declarations are processed electronically through the national customs system run by the State Revenue Service (Valsts ieņēmumu dienests). Every commercial importer needs an EORI number — the EU Economic Operators Registration and Identification number — registered before cargo can clear in its name. Latvia’s standard import VAT rate is 21%, applied on top of any customs duty, and is recoverable for VAT-registered businesses through the regular VAT return. Goods of preferential UAE origin can clear at a reduced or zero duty rate where a valid origin certificate accompanies the shipment — we arrange the origin documentation with the UAE exporter where the relevant trade arrangement applies.
For cargo destined onward into other EU countries, or for goods that need to move under suspension to a bonded warehouse, we use T1 external transit and T2 internal transit procedures so that import VAT and duty are settled at the right point in the chain. For temporary movements — exhibition stock, demonstration equipment, professional tools intended to return to the UAE — an ATA carnet is often the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.
Why classification accuracy matters on this corridor
The HS code assigned to your cargo sets the duty rate, the VAT base and any licensing or restriction that applies. An incorrect classification can lead to delays at the port, reassessed duty, penalty interest and a compliance record that costs far more than careful preparation would have. We do not guess on classification; we confirm it before the shipment moves and document the reasoning so that any later query from Latvian customs is answered straight from the file.
Bonded warehousing and staged clearance
For larger UAE shippers, bonded warehouse storage at Riga or Ventspils keeps cargo in customs suspension until the goods are actually needed — useful when the inland customer is not ready, when VAT cashflow needs managing, or when a single consignment will be split across several onward destinations. We coordinate the warehouse, the staged clearance and the inland trucking to Daugavpils, Liepāja, Jelgava and the rest of the country.
How a commercial shipment runs
- Brief us. What is shipping, its HS classification if known, value, weight and dimensions, the Latvian consignee’s EORI, and when it needs to arrive.
- Quote and route. You receive a clear quote with the freight mode, a realistic transit time, the customs treatment, the origin position if applicable, and any T1/T2 or bonded options explained.
- Document and book. Latvian customs documentation is prepared, origin and any licensing evidence is collected, vessel or aircraft space is booked and the cargo is collected in the UAE.
- Track to delivery. Your coordinator monitors the shipment through each handover, manages Latvian customs clearance, and confirms delivery at the final destination — or onward into the EU under transit.
Whether it is a single consignment or recurring freight into the country, we route and document it properly — and the country guide at moving to Latvia sets out the wider corridor picture. Request a freight quote and we will confirm the right approach for your cargo, the EORI and customs treatment, and any duty or VAT planning that applies.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Latvia take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
