Moving to Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a strange and useful piece of geography for a mover — a British Overseas Territory of barely seven square kilometres clinging to the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, English-speaking, sterling-using, yet sitting outside the EU and outside the UK customs union with a customs house of its own. The Rock looks across the bay at Algeciras and shares a single land border with Spain at La Línea. For a household shipment out of Jebel Ali, that combination shapes every decision: the box almost always arrives by way of the Strait, and the last leg often runs over a road border that has a queue with a mind of its own.

The people we move on this corridor cluster around what Gibraltar actually does. Online gaming and gambling firms employ a large share of the workforce, and they bring compliance, technology and operations staff in from Dubai. Financial services and insurance add another stream. Shipping and bunkering — the Port of Gibraltar is one of the busiest bunkering stations in the western Mediterranean — brings maritime professionals. And then there is the quieter movement driven by tax: residents drawn to the no-VAT, low-tax regime, some under Category 2 high-net-worth status, alongside the families who follow all of the above. We have run UAE–international moves for 22 years and just over 1,213 of them; the Gibraltar end is small, specific, and entirely workable once the customs side is understood.

1. Survey and brief

   A UAE survey or video walk-through, volume measured in cubic metres, and any item that changes customs treatment flagged early. Because Gibraltar is so compact, access at the delivery end matters — we ask about the street, the building and parking from the outset.

2. Documentation before sail

   Inventory prepared for an HM Customs Gibraltar lodgement, transfer-of-residence relief claim drafted, proof of six-month ownership gathered, residence evidence and passport details confirmed. Where a Spanish road leg is involved, the transit paperwork through Algeciras or Malaga is set up too.

3. Export pack and dispatch

   Export-standard packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, ISPM-15 timber where needed. Booked on a Mediterranean rotation through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Port of Gibraltar, or to Algeciras across the bay for the short road hop over the border.

Sea and air routes

The sea route is the backbone. A container out of Jebel Ali runs the Mediterranean rotation, transits the Suez Canal and reaches the Strait of Gibraltar in roughly 14 to 20 days, depending on the service and the number of calls. Two endings are common. The first lands directly at the Port of Gibraltar — tidy, no border to cross, but served by fewer rotations. The second discharges at Algeciras, the major Spanish container port directly across the Bay of Gibraltar, after which the box completes a short road leg over the land frontier at La Línea. Algeciras has far more sailings from the Gulf, so it is frequently the faster booking overall even with the road hop on the end.

Air is the awkward part. Direct DXB to GIB capacity is limited, and most air routings to Gibraltar connect through the UK, which adds time and cost from the Gulf. The alternative most clients take is to fly to Malaga in southern Spain — well connected from Dubai — and finish with a road transfer of about an hour and a half down the coast and across the border. We use air for the urgent, high-value fraction of a move; the body of the household goes by sea.

HM Customs Gibraltar, no VAT and transfer-of-residence relief

This is the point that catches people out, so it is worth being plain about. Gibraltar left the EU alongside the UK, and it is not inside the UK for customs either. It runs its own customs administration, HM Customs Gibraltar, and your shipment clears there as a Gibraltar import. The standout feature is that Gibraltar levies no VAT at all — there is simply no import VAT line on a Gibraltar clearance — and its import duties are modest by European standards. For a household relocation, transfer-of-residence relief covers the duty side on personal effects owned six months or more, where you are genuinely taking up residence. The La Línea land border

If your goods finish by road from Algeciras or Malaga, they cross into Gibraltar at La Línea, the only land frontier the territory has. It is a real border with checks on both sides, and queues there are a genuine and well-known variable — they can be short at a quiet hour and long at a bad one, and they fluctuate with the day, the season and wider Spain–Gibraltar arrangements. We treat it as a planning input rather than an afterthought: choosing the crossing window, keeping the transit documentation clean so nothing is held at the line, and giving you a realistic arrival rather than an optimistic one. A direct sea landing at the Port of Gibraltar sidesteps the border entirely, which is one reason we sometimes recommend it.

Used cars, pets and what stays behind

A used UAE vehicle can move, but Gibraltar is small, parking is tight, and the car must be registered and tested locally after import — sensible only if you genuinely need it on the Rock, since a great many residents manage without one or keep a vehicle on the Spanish side. We will give you a straight read on whether shipping yours is worth it. Pets travel under Gibraltar's import requirements: microchip, current rabies vaccination and the right veterinary certification from an official UAE vet, with timing that has to line up against the vaccination dates; we hand off to a specialist pet-relocation agent for the flight and clearance. As for what does not ship — firearms and weapons need permits and rarely travel with a household move, certain regulated items are restricted, large quantities of alcohol or new boxed goods read as commercial rather than personal effects, and plants generally stay behind. We flag every one of these at survey, not at the quayside.
