Pet relocation to Cyprus

Cyprus applies the EU’s third-country pet entry rules, which are detailed and strictly enforced. For animals coming from the UAE — a third country in EU terminology — the requirements are not unreasonable, but they are sequential: each step has to be completed in the correct order, and some steps carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Miss a step or get the order wrong, and the animal cannot enter at the Cyprus border.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Cyprus is: an ISO-compliant microchip implanted first, a primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been fitted (never before), a rabies antibody titration blood test taken at an EU-approved laboratory at least thirty days after that vaccination, and then a waiting period — generally three months from the date of the qualifying blood sample — before the animal can enter. An EU animal health certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian within a short window before travel, and the animal must arrive in Cyprus through a designated point of entry where the documentation is checked.

Because Cyprus is an island, the practical entry route for a pet is by air, so the journey is planned around the available DXB connections. We confirm the airline animal-acceptance rules, the crate requirements and the booking well in advance, because flights with pet capacity are limited and the titer waiting period already fixes the earliest possible travel date.

Vehicle shipping to Cyprus

Shipping a car from the UAE to Cyprus involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, Cyprus registration requirements and a roadworthiness inspection — and one detail catches many people out: Cyprus drives on the left, so a left-hand-drive UAE-specification vehicle, while not prohibited, is worth thinking carefully about before committing to the shipment. The treatment of the vehicle at Cypriot customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle that has been owned and used by the owner for a qualifying period before the move — generally at least six months — and which the owner will continue to use in Cyprus can usually be imported under the transfer-of-residence relief and exempted from import duty and VAT, claimed alongside the household effects. Without that relief, duty and VAT are payable on the customs value of the vehicle.

Once cleared, the vehicle is registered in Cyprus through the Department of Road Transport. The process includes a roadworthiness inspection (the Cypriot MOT) confirming the car meets technical and safety standards, registration of the vehicle, payment of road tax, registration of insurance, and the issue of Cyprus number plates.
