When UAE families ask what is most demanding about a move to Iceland, it is rarely the furniture — it is the family pet and the car. Both are subject to entry requirements that are specific, strictly enforced and, in Iceland’s case, genuinely exceptional. Iceland operates one of the strictest animal-import biosecurity regimes anywhere in the world, and bringing a cat or dog into the country is not a routine task. Seemleius coordinates both the pet and the vehicle as a managed part of your move on the UAE–Iceland corridor — and on the pet side in particular, the earlier you raise it, the better the outcome.
Pet relocation to Iceland
This section deserves to be read carefully, because Iceland’s rules are unlike those of mainland Europe. Iceland has a small, isolated animal population with limited exposure to diseases common elsewhere, and the country protects that status aggressively. Importing a cat or dog requires an import permit issued in advance by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST), and — critically — every imported cat and dog must complete a mandatory quarantine period in an approved Icelandic quarantine facility on arrival. This is not optional, it cannot be waived, and it cannot be served at home. An animal that arrives without a valid permit, or outside the permitted conditions, will not be allowed to enter.
The process therefore has to be planned months ahead, not weeks. The broad sequence for a dog or cat moving from the UAE to Iceland is: confirm the animal is an eligible species and breed — certain dog breeds are not permitted entry at all — then apply to MAST for the import permit before any travel is booked. The permit conditions set out the required ISO-compliant microchip, vaccinations, any rabies antibody (titre) blood test they call for, and a series of treatments and veterinary checks, each of which must be done in the correct order and within defined timeframes. Quarantine space is limited and must be reserved in advance; the permit and the quarantine booking go together. We map the full sequence with you and against MAST’s current requirements, because the requirements are detailed and are revised from time to time.
- Eligibility check first — species and breed confirmed against Iceland’s import rules before anything else is committed
- MAST import permit applied for well in advance, with the quarantine facility place reserved alongside it
- Microchip, vaccinations, any required blood tests and treatments sequenced precisely to the permit conditions, typically with several months of lead time
- Approved air routing from DXB and the mandatory quarantine stay coordinated, with realistic guidance on the overall timeline and the costs involved
We will always be straightforward with you about this: an Iceland pet move is a long-lead, carefully staged process, and the mandatory quarantine is a fixed feature of it. Families who start early and plan properly bring their animals successfully; families who treat it as an afterthought run into requirements that simply cannot be compressed.
Vehicle shipping to Iceland
Shipping a car from the UAE to Iceland involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, Icelandic customs treatment through Skatturinn, registration with the Icelandic transport authority and a roadworthiness inspection — and because Iceland is in the EEA but not the EU customs union, the import is a standalone Icelandic clearance, not an EU one. We handle the logistics chain and make sure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward about the duty, VAT, registration and inspection costs so there are no surprises on arrival.
The customs treatment depends on whether the vehicle qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A car that the owner has genuinely owned and used for a qualifying period before the move, and will continue to use in Iceland, can usually be imported under the same transfer-of-residence provisions that cover the household goods — bringing relief from the import charges that would otherwise apply. Without that relief, Icelandic customs duty and the standard 24% VAT are assessed on the customs value of the vehicle. We confirm the position before the car ships rather than leaving it to be discovered at the port.
Once cleared, the vehicle must be registered with Samgöngustofa (the Icelandic Transport Authority) and pass a roadworthiness inspection at an approved station before it can be driven legally. UAE-specification vehicles sometimes need adjustment to meet Icelandic technical and lighting standards, and Iceland’s driving environment is a real consideration in its own right — winter conditions mean proper tyres and equipment are not optional. We set out the registration and inspection steps in advance so you know what it takes to make the car road-legal and properly prepared.
- Container freight booked from a port outside the Strait of Hormuz, routed through a northern European hub onward to Reykjavík
- UAE export and Icelandic Skatturinn import documentation prepared — including the transfer-of-residence relief application for the vehicle where it qualifies
- Roadworthiness inspection coordinated after clearance, with guidance on any modifications a UAE-spec vehicle typically needs
- Registration with the Icelandic transport authority set out in advance, so the car can be made road-legal after it arrives
How it works
- Tell us what is moving. The pet (species, breed, age) and / or the vehicle (make, model, year, current specification), plus your anticipated move dates.
- Map the requirements. We set out the MAST import-permit and quarantine sequence for the pet and the Icelandic customs, inspection and registration sequence for the vehicle — including the lead times and fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened.
- Coordinate the journeys. Pet travel on an approved DXB route with its quarantine booking, and vehicle freight by sea, are booked and aligned with your household shipment so arrivals are sequenced sensibly.
- Keep you informed. Your coordinator updates you through each stage — permit approval, test results, customs clearance, quarantine progress, inspection and registration — and you can ask for an update at any stage.
Of everything on the UAE–Iceland corridor, the pet timeline is the one that rewards early action most — the import permit and the mandatory quarantine fix the framework, and there is no shortcut around either. For the wider corridor picture, see our guide to moving to Iceland. Get in touch as soon as you have a move date and we will map out the full timeline for both the pet and the vehicle.

Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Iceland take?
It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
