Iceland sits alone in the North Atlantic, with no road in and no land border, and that single geographic fact shapes every move onto the island. Goods reach Reykjavík by sea or by air and clear a customs authority that answers to no one else. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, containers go by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman. There is no direct deep-sea sailing to Iceland from there, so a container is transhipped onto the Iceland lines — Eimskip or Samskip — through a North-Europe hub such as Rotterdam or Hamburg. That extra leg is why a UAE-to-Iceland box runs longer than a mainland European one, and we would rather you heard it from us at the survey than at the quay. Routing and dates are confirmed at that survey, and the plan is built on them.

The people on this corridor are a particular mix. Engineers and project staff joining the renewable-energy and aluminium plants that Iceland’s low-cost geothermal and hydro power attract; data-centre and tech specialists drawn by the same low-carbon electricity; marine and fishing-sector professionals; and families who want the safety, the schooling and the open landscape. Most settle in or near Reykjavík, with a steady trickle to Akureyri in the north. Remoteness is the trade-off they accept, and a move that respects island timelines — transhipment routing, a customs clearance that stands apart from the EU, and pet rules among the strictest anywhere — is the difference between a calm arrival and an expensive scramble. Seemleius brings 22 years’ experience to planning a move like this.

Why move with Seemleius

Transhipment routed honestly

No box sails from the UAE to Reykjavík direct. It is transhipped onto an Eimskip or Samskip service through a hub such as Rotterdam or Hamburg, and we confirm the routing and dates at the survey rather than promise a hopeful timeline.

Non-EU customs prepared first

Iceland is in the EEA but outside the EU customs union. Your goods clear Skatturinn — Iceland Revenue and Customs — in their own right, with VSK at 24% and any duty assessed locally. We build that declaration before the box leaves the UAE.

Pet rules flagged early

Iceland’s MAST import controls are among the world’s strictest, with import permits and a quarantine stay required. If a pet is travelling, we raise it at the first conversation, because the permit lead time often sets the whole timeline.

How your move works

  1. Survey and brief

A UAE survey or video walk-through measures volume in cubic metres and flags anything that changes customs treatment. Sea against air comes back priced honestly, with the transhipment leg and its timeline set out plainly.

  2. Documentation before sail

The Skatturinn import file is built with a full inventory, evidence of the residence move and proof of prior ownership for buslod relief. If a pet or a vehicle is involved, the MAST permit and import paperwork start here, not later.

  3. Pack and route via the hub

Export-standard pack from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, ISPM-15 timber where needed, then booking onto a rotation to Rotterdam or Hamburg and the connecting Eimskip or Samskip sailing to Reykjavík. Air routes via a European hub into Keflavík.

  4. Clear and deliver

Clearance is lodged with Skatturinn at the Reykjavík port, buslod relief applied where it qualifies, the container devanned and trucked to your address. Our destination partner unpacks, reassembles and clears debris on the same visit.

The UAE–Iceland corridor in detail

Transhipment routing and a realistic timeline

Because no liner runs from the UAE to Iceland directly, the practical route is two sea legs. The first carries your container from the departure port to a North-Europe hub — usually Rotterdam or Hamburg — on a mainline rotation. At the hub it transfers onto one of the dedicated Iceland services, Eimskip or Samskip, which sail a regular schedule up to Reykjavík. The overall time depends on the connection window at the hub and the weekly cadence of the Iceland sailing, so routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Add a few working days for Skatturinn clearance and a short road leg into the capital region. The timeline is longer than a German or Dutch move for one reason — the transfer — and it is easier to plan once the booking is set against the right connection.

Air freight via a European hub

There is no direct DXB to Keflavík flight; air freight connects through a European gateway and lands at Keflavík (KEF), about 50 kilometres from Reykjavík. Air suits a modest volume, a tight start date, or the working essentials that must be in place before the sea container arrives. It is dearer per cubic metre, so the usual pattern pairs a small priority air consignment with the main sea shipment, both under one inventory so Skatturinn sees a single coherent import.

Skatturinn customs, VSK and buslod relief

EEA membership gives Iceland the single market but keeps it outside the EU customs union, so a shipment is never “cleared into Europe” and then waved across. It is declared to Skatturinn — Iceland Revenue and Customs — as a distinct import, with VSK (Icelandic VAT) at the standard 24% and any applicable duty assessed there. Against that, most arriving residents qualify for buslod, the transfer-of-residence relief: personal household effects owned and used for 12 months or more come in free of import duty and VSK, provided they are genuinely your used belongings and you are relocating your home rather than importing for sale. New purchases and goods bought shortly before departure sit outside it. Skatturinn expects a clear inventory, evidence of the residence change and proof of prior ownership, which we assemble with you before sailing so the relief is granted cleanly rather than queried at the port.

Bringing a used car

A used vehicle can be imported, but Iceland taxes it heavily, and that needs saying plainly. On top of any duty, VSK at 24% applies, and a separate excise charge banded by CO2 emissions is assessed against the car, which on a typical UAE SUV can come to a large share of its value. It must also meet Icelandic registration and roadworthiness rules once landed. For many movers the tax and effort outweigh the value, and selling in the UAE then buying locally works out better. We price the import honestly so the decision rests on real numbers.

Pets and the MAST quarantine rules

This is the point that catches people, so we put it early in planning. Iceland’s Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST, runs one of the strictest pet-import regimes anywhere. Bringing a cat or dog requires an import permit applied for in advance, a defined sequence of vaccinations and blood tests in the months before travel, and a mandatory stay in an approved quarantine facility on arrival. That permit and testing schedule frequently set the critical path for the whole relocation, well ahead of any furniture. We do not clear animals ourselves, but we flag the requirements at the first conversation and coordinate timing with the specialist handler you appoint.

Kennitala and what you arrive into

Daily life in Iceland runs on the kennitala, the national identification number issued by Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá). A bank account, a tenancy, a salary, a doctor and a child’s school place all depend on it and on a registered legal domicile. Residence permits are a matter for the Directorate of Immigration, so check what applies to you there. We line the shipment up against your confirmed address so nothing lands before you can receive it.

Restricted goods and pricing

Some things do not travel or need their own paperwork: firearms and ammunition are tightly controlled, certain foodstuffs and plants face restriction or phytosanitary checks, and alcohol above personal allowances is excluded. New boxed electronics and commercial stock are treated as trade goods and lose the buslod relief. Pricing builds from volume, the transhipment routing, freight mode, customs treatment and delivery access, and every quote itemises freight, the hub transfer, customs, haulage and packing separately, so you can see where each figure sits; transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available, with terms confirmed in your quote.

Energy and data-centre

Abu Dhabi to a Reykjavík data-centre role

Take a data-centre engineer joining one of the renewable-powered sites near the capital, with a fixed start date and a small flat waiting. The coordinator splits the move into a priority air consignment into Keflavík for the working essentials and a sea container for the rest, both on one inventory for the buslod relief claim. The air shipment is planned to reach the flat before the start date, and the container follows on the routing and dates confirmed at the survey.

Marine and tech

Dubai to a Hafnarfjörður marine project

A typical case: a marine-systems specialist moving a part-household and a crate of test equipment to the harbour town on the capital’s edge. The coordinator routes the container through a North-Europe hub such as Rotterdam onto an Iceland sailing, prepares one consistent import file for Skatturinn covering the equipment and the personal effects, and plans devanning around the engineer’s site induction.

Family and commercial

Dubai family home to Kópavogur

For example, a family of four moving the contents of a villa to the residential municipality south of Reykjavík, with a fixed school start date. The coordinator builds the schedule backwards from the term date, books the hub transfer onto the Iceland service once the routing is confirmed at the survey, prepares the buslod file with the tenancy and ownership evidence, and flags the cat’s MAST permit early so the family’s pet handler can reserve the quarantine place in good time.

Frequently asked questions — Iceland corridor

What is buslod relief and do I qualify?

Buslod is Iceland’s transfer-of-residence relief. It lets you bring used personal household effects in free of import duty and VSK if you have owned and used them for 12 months or more, you are relocating your residence to Iceland, and the goods are genuinely your belongings rather than items for sale. New purchases and goods bought just before departure fall outside it.

Why does shipping to Iceland take longer than mainland Europe?

There is no direct sailing from the UAE to Iceland. The container is transhipped through a North-Europe hub such as Rotterdam or Hamburg, then loaded onto an Eimskip or Samskip service up to Reykjavík. That transfer makes it a longer trip than a move to Germany; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey.

How does Icelandic customs differ from the EU?

Iceland is in the EEA but not the EU customs union, so your goods are not cleared into Europe and then carried across. They are declared to Skatturinn, Iceland Revenue and Customs, as a separate import, with VSK at 24% and any duty assessed locally. We prepare that declaration before the shipment sails.

Can I bring my UAE car?

You can, but Iceland taxes vehicle imports heavily. Alongside any duty, VSK at 24% applies and a CO2-banded excise charge is assessed, which on a typical UAE SUV can reach a large share of the car’s value, and it must then meet local registration rules. For many movers selling in the UAE and buying locally works out better. We price the import honestly so you can decide on real figures.

What about bringing a pet?

Iceland’s MAST regime is one of the strictest anywhere. A cat or dog needs an import permit applied for in advance, a set sequence of vaccinations and blood tests over the preceding months, and a stay in an approved quarantine facility on arrival. The permit and testing schedule often set the critical path for the whole move, so we flag it at the first conversation and coordinate timing with your appointed handler.

What is a kennitala and when do I get one?

The kennitala is Iceland’s national identification number, issued by Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá). Banking, tenancies, salary, healthcare and schooling all depend on it and on a registered domicile. When you receive one depends on your residence status; Registers Iceland and the Directorate of Immigration can confirm what applies to you. We align the shipment with your confirmed address.

Who handles the Icelandic end?

Our destination partner in Iceland handles the Skatturinn clearance and delivery, and the same coordinator who runs your UAE survey stays your single point of contact through the hub transfer and on to delivery.

How far ahead should I book?

Four to six weeks before dispatch is comfortable for a full container, and longer if a pet is travelling, because the MAST permit and quarantine booking can take the most time of anything. The earlier the buslod file starts, the cleaner the clearance at the Reykjavík port.
