Relocating employees from the UAE to Iceland is a specialised corridor — concentrated in the energy, renewables, data-centre, healthcare and technology sectors — but for the HR and mobility teams managing it, the challenges are the familiar ones at a new level of detail. The difficulty is rarely any single move; it is making each one consistent, compliant and reportable when the destination is an island with its own customs authority, its own residency system and a freight routing that takes weeks rather than days. Seemleius employee relocation to Iceland is built for that, with the documentation discipline that Icelandic customs requires.
Why Iceland moves need programme thinking
Iceland adds layers that simpler destinations do not. Residence and work permits are for the employer and employee to settle with the Icelandic immigration authorities, and we schedule each move around the dates they confirm. On the move side, the shipment clears Skatturinn, Iceland Revenue and Customs, as a standalone Icelandic import that has nothing to do with EU customs, and that clearance has to be prepared accurately for every single relocation.
If that preparation is different each time — different vendors, different documentation formats, different levels of care — the inconsistency shows up as delays, cost variance and avoidable employee stress. We build it consistently from the start, timed to the employee’s housing and domicile registration so the household shipment lands in the right window rather than ahead of an address or long after it.
The kennitala drives the settling-in timeline
Iceland organises residency around the kennitala, the national identification number issued by Registers Iceland. Once the employee has registered a legal domicile and been issued a kennitala, that number is what unlocks the rest of life on the island: a bank account, a salary paid correctly, registration with a local health centre, a tenancy in the employee’s own name, and a school place for a child all depend on it. Without the kennitala and a registered domicile, very little can be completed.
This has direct consequences for how the household shipment is timed. If the employee’s goods arrive before they have a confirmed permanent address, there is nowhere to deliver them — and on an island corridor, redirecting or storing a shipment is costly. If the goods arrive too late, the employee lives out of suitcases for weeks. We coordinate the sea or air freight from the UAE so it lands shortly after the employee has secured housing and registered their domicile, accounting honestly for the multi-week sea transit. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, that transit starts with a road leg to a port outside the strait, then runs through the northern European hub.
What the programme covers
Policy-aligned moves
Every relocation to Iceland runs to your mobility policy — volume caps, entitlements, approvals — without requiring you to police each one individually.
Customs handled for each employee
Icelandic import documentation and the transfer-of-residence relief application prepared accurately for Skatturinn on every move — the employee does not navigate it and neither does HR.
Employee support
The relocating person has one coordinator from the UAE survey to the Icelandic delivery — reducing stress and the questions that would otherwise come back to HR.
Consistent records
Quotes, inventories and invoices in a consistent format across every move, ready for finance and mobility reporting.
Schools and family relocation
Employees moving with children encounter an Icelandic school system run by the municipalities. Compulsory schooling — grunnskóli — is provided by the local authority and is the default route, with strong language-support arrangements for children who do not yet speak Icelandic. In the capital region, Reykjavík, Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður each run their own admissions; international schooling options exist but are limited, which is worth setting expectations on early. School registration depends on the child being registered with Registers Iceland, which loops back to the kennitala, the domicile and the housing timeline.
The first weeks: kennitala, tax and health cover
The first weeks in Iceland are procedural by design. The legal domicile is registered and the kennitala is issued; the employer registers the employee for payroll, and tax withholding is set up with Skatturinn; access to the public healthcare system follows once the residency and registration conditions are met, after a qualifying period that the employee should understand in advance. We brief each relocating employee on the sequence and what to have ready — the documents the Icelandic registration authorities ask for — so their first weeks are about settling in, not chasing paperwork.
How the programme works
- Align the programme. We map to your mobility policy once — entitlements, documentation standards, reporting format — so every Iceland move runs the same way.
- Initiate a move. HR refers the employee; we survey in the UAE, prepare the Skatturinn documentation, align the shipment timing with the employee’s arrival and housing, and return a policy-checked quote.
- Manage the relocation. Packing, sea from the departure port via the northern hub or air via DXB, Icelandic import clearance at Reykjavík or Keflavík, and delivery are coordinated for the employee, with HR updated at each milestone.
- Report. You receive consistent documentation and status reporting across every move — ready for finance, audit and mobility programme review.
Whether you move a handful of employees a year to Iceland or run a sustained programme for a global energy or technology organisation, the service scales without losing consistency. Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Iceland take?
It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
