Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, a container for Turkey goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sails from there to İstanbul’s Ambarlı terminals, or to Mersin for the south coast. Routing and dates are confirmed at the survey, and once the sailing is booked we hand you the vessel name, the booking reference and a projected ETA to plan around. Whether you are taking a family to a Kadıköy apartment, moving a professional into an İstanbul office, or settling on the Antalya coast, this is a corridor we run regularly, and daily Dubai–İstanbul flights sit alongside the sea route for anything urgent.
A Turkey move is as much about paperwork as freight. What keeps it calm is getting the customs side right before the box ever sails: matching the shipment to your residence permit, preparing a Turkish-language inventory that a customs officer will accept, and knowing which items change the treatment at the border. With 22 years’ experience behind us, that is the part we prepare most carefully.
Why move with Seemleius
Freight timed to your residence permit
Turkey grants relief on used household goods to people establishing residence, but only against a valid residence permit (ikamet) and within a set window. We time the freight to your permit so your belongings are not sitting in bond waiting on paperwork.
Turkish inventory, done right
Turkish customs expect a detailed inventory, usually in Turkish and cleared through a licensed broker (gümrük müşaviri). A mismatch between the list and the declared value holds the container, so we prepare and pre-check it before anything ships.
One coordinator, survey to delivery
UAE export, the sea or air booking, Turkish import and final delivery sit with one named coordinator, so nothing falls between vendors and one person always knows exactly where your shipment stands.
How your move works
-
Survey and brief
A home survey across Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, or a video walk-through, with volume measured in cubic metres and anything that changes customs treatment flagged early. Sea and air options come back priced.
-
Documentation before sail
We assemble your residence-permit evidence, passport copy and a full Turkish-language inventory, and brief the customs broker in Turkey before departure. Commercial flows get HS-coded invoices and the right import registration.
-
Export pack and dispatch
Export-standard packing from your UAE address, ISPM-15 timber for any crating, then a booked rotation to İstanbul (Ambarlı), Mersin or İzmir, or air from DXB to İstanbul for time-critical consignments.
-
Clearance and delivery
The broker lodges the entry against your residence permit, the container is cleared at the arrival port, then trucked to your door in İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir or Antalya, where our destination partner unpacks, reassembles the larger pieces and clears the debris.
The UAE–Turkey corridor in detail
Sea ports, air routes and modes
Most shipments travel by sea. İstanbul’s Ambarlı terminals on the European side are the default for the northwest, Marmara and the city itself; Mersin is the gateway for the southern and Mediterranean coast, including Antalya; and İzmir (Aliağa) serves the Aegean. Sailing dates from the departure port are confirmed at the survey; after arrival, allow a few days for clearance and one to two days of road delivery. Air is the faster alternative — usually four to five days from Dubai to İstanbul Airport — but priced for urgency, so the sensible split is sea for volume, air for the things you cannot be without.
Turkish customs and the residence permit
For personal effects the relief that matters is the used-household-goods exemption for people taking up residence in Turkey. It is tied to a valid residence permit (ikamet izni), the goods generally have to arrive within a defined period of your establishing residence, and the declaration is normally made through a licensed customs broker against a detailed inventory. Used belongings you have owned and used already are the straightforward case; brand-new goods, and anything bought in the run-up to the move, are treated differently. Because the exemption is granted against paperwork that has to be in order before the goods land, we prepare the file at the documentation stage, not at the quayside, and we confirm the current rules and time window with our destination partner at the survey.
Restricted goods, pets and vehicles
Some categories sit outside a normal household clearance, and we flag them at the survey rather than the border. New goods, and alcohol and tobacco above personal allowances, attract duty and tax. Firearms and certain bladed articles are prohibited or need specific authority, and commercial stock is declared on its own invoice. Pets move under Turkey’s import rules — an ISO-standard microchip, a current rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody titre test where required, and an official veterinary health certificate — usually flying into İstanbul, with a limit on the number of animals per passenger. Vehicles are the hard case: Turkey applies strict limits and heavy taxes on importing used foreign cars, and for most moves it simply is not economical — we give you a frank view at the survey rather than a false hope.
What drives the cost
Every quote itemises its levers: volume in cubic metres, any sea-to-air split, custom crates, port handling at the departure port, Turkish terminal handling and broker fees, and onward road delivery, which rises with distance from the port — lowest into İstanbul, higher to Ankara, İzmir and the Antalya coast. We do not quote a flat rate sight unseen.
A Dubai villa to a Kadıköy apartment
A family swapping a Ranches villa for an apartment on İstanbul’s Asian side, with a school place fixing the deadline. The coordinator plans the move around the residence-permit date and the start of term, has the Turkish-language inventory ready before the container leaves, and books the sea freight to Ambarlı once the routing is confirmed at the survey. Our destination partner handles clearance, delivery and unpacking at the new apartment.
Abu Dhabi to an İstanbul office role
A senior manager with a fixed start date, who needs a working setup in İstanbul before the household follows. The coordinator splits the move — priority air into İstanbul Airport for the essentials, a sea container to Ambarlı for the rest — with both shipments documented against the same residence permit, using consistent inventory references.
Trading stock to an İzmir warehouse
A UAE business consolidating stock into a leased unit near İzmir, declared as a commercial import. The coordinator prepares HS-coded invoices in Dubai, checks that the import registration is in place and briefs the customs broker before the container reaches Aliağa, so the haulage can be timed to when the warehouse is ready.
Frequently asked questions — Turkey corridor
What paperwork does Turkish customs need for my household goods?
Typically a valid residence permit (ikamet), your passport, and a detailed inventory of the shipment, cleared through a licensed customs broker. We prepare the inventory, brief the broker and confirm the current requirements and time window before anything ships.
Will I have to pay duty on my belongings?
Used personal effects imported under the residence exemption generally enter without duty, provided the paperwork is in order and the goods arrive within the permitted window. Duty and tax apply to new goods, to alcohol and tobacco above allowances, and to commercial stock, which we separate at the survey.
Can I bring my pet to Turkey?
Yes, under Turkey’s pet import rules: an ISO-standard microchip, a current rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody titre test where required, and an official veterinary health certificate from a UAE vet. Pets usually fly into İstanbul, and there is a limit on the number of animals per passenger, which we plan around.
Can I import my car to Turkey?
For most people, no — Turkey applies strict limits and heavy taxes on importing used foreign-registered vehicles, and it is rarely economical. We give you a straight answer at the survey rather than ship a car you would struggle to register.
Should I choose sea or air?
Sea is the cost-effective mode for a full household when your dates allow for the sea schedule, which is confirmed at the survey; air is faster, usually four to five days from Dubai to İstanbul, but priced for urgency. Many moves use a sea container with a small air component for essentials.
Is my shipment insured?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available, with the terms confirmed in your quote. Cover is based on the replacement value you declare; high-value items such as art, jewellery and watches should be itemised separately; and a claim has a defined window from delivery.
What cannot be shipped?
Firearms and certain bladed articles are prohibited or need specific authority, large quantities of alcohol or tobacco are dutiable, and commercial stock must be declared on its own invoice rather than hidden in a household shipment.
How long does the whole move take?
For a sea move, the sailing time depends on the routing, which is confirmed at the survey together with your dates. After arrival, allow a few days for clearance, then one to two days of road delivery. Air usually compresses the freight leg to four to five days.
Who handles the Turkey end?
Our destination partner in Turkey handles the import, customs clearance and delivery, and the coordinator who set up your UAE export stays your single point of contact — one person owns the move from the first quote to the final signature. Booking four to six weeks ahead helps.
