Moving your home? Moving Company from Dubai to South Africa: Johannesburg, Durban and Pretoria · Moving Company from Dubai to Cape Town, Door to Door

South Africa sits at the southern tip of Africa, roughly 8,000 kilometres from the UAE. This is not a corridor measured in days on a road — it is a proper intercontinental sea route, and it behaves like one. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, containers go by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, before sailing for Durban, sometimes with transshipment via a southern African hub. Cape Town routings often involve a feeder leg as well. Routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. The planning window needs to start earlier than on shorter Gulf or Indian Ocean routes, and where in South Africa you are headed shapes the logistics considerably.

Seemleius runs household moves, corporate relocations, employee transfers and commercial freight on this corridor for a steady mix of people: families making a long-term move, professionals following roles in Johannesburg’s financial and mining sectors, and companies shifting operations or stock between the two markets. Air freight from DXB to O.R. Tambo (JNB) is a direct eight-hour run on the major carriers, which makes it a useful complement to sea on most jobs — not a replacement, but a way to bridge the weeks the sea shipment is in transit.

Why where you are going in South Africa matters

This corridor has a geographic detail that genuinely changes the logistics. Almost every sea shipment arrives at one of South Africa’s main ports — Durban on the east coast, or Cape Town on the west. If you are moving to Cape Town, delivery from the port is relatively direct. If you are moving to Johannesburg or the wider Gauteng region, you are inland: the freight arrives at Durban and then faces a significant road haul up to the highveld — roughly 600 kilometres on the N3. That inland leg needs to be planned, costed and scheduled as part of the move, not treated as a given. Sandton, Bryanston, Pretoria East and the Midrand corridor all sit at the end of that haul.

Johannesburg & Gauteng

The financial and mining capital. Sea freight arrives at Durban then moves overland to Gauteng — the inland haul is a real part of the journey plan.

Cape Town

The legislative capital and a major destination for family relocation. Port delivery is direct from Cape Town harbour to Camps Bay, Constantia and the southern suburbs.

Durban

The main Indian Ocean port and a significant commercial centre. Coastal location means port-to-address delivery is the most straightforward on this corridor; Umhlanga is twenty minutes from the terminal.

Other centres

Pretoria, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), East London and Stellenbosch — onward transport planned as part of the move.

Freight modes on this corridor

Sea freight is the backbone of UAE–South Africa moves. For a full household or a bulk commercial shipment, it is the practical, cost-effective choice. A 20-foot or 40-foot container loaded at our Dubai warehouse and shipped by sea clears customs at Durban, then runs inland by road. Air freight serves the time-critical: an advance parcel of essentials while the sea shipment is en route, or a high-value commercial consignment that cannot wait. Emirates SkyCargo and Qatar via Doha both offer reliable belly-hold capacity into JNB and CPT, and we advise on both in every quote.

South African customs in a sentence

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) handles import clearance. Household effects of a person changing residence to South Africa, including a South African returning after six months or more abroad, can enter without duty and VAT under rebate item 407.06, declared on form DA 304 with form P1.160 and an inventory. Motor vehicles, alcohol and tobacco are excluded. Standard VAT in South Africa is 15 per cent. We prepare documentation against the SARS framework before the shipment leaves Dubai, so the clearance at Durban or Cape Town is a process rather than a problem.

How your move to South Africa works

  1. Survey and plan. We assess what is moving, confirm your South African destination, and return a quote that accounts for the full journey — including the inland leg if you are headed to Gauteng.
  2. Document in advance. SARS requires accurate, complete documentation. We prepare UAE export paperwork and South African import documentation, including DA 304 where relevant, before the shipment leaves the UAE.
  3. Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard, builds a full inventory, and dispatches on the booked sea or air route.
  4. Clear and deliver. Our destination partner handles SARS customs clearance at the port, then onward road transport and delivery at your address — in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or anywhere else — while your coordinator in Dubai stays your single point of contact.

A family relocating a household to Camps Bay and a mining company shipping equipment to a Gauteng yard are on the same corridor but running very different logistics. Pick the guide below that matches your situation, or request a quote and a coordinator will walk you through it.
