Iceland is an island economy with no land freight option at all, and that defines how commercial cargo reaches it. Every consignment of stock, equipment or industrial goods arrives by sea or by air, clears a national customs authority, and depends on a routing that almost always involves a transhipment hub. For UAE businesses shipping into Iceland, that means the route and the documentation have to be planned together, well before the cargo moves. Seemleius commercial cargo and freight on the UAE–Iceland corridor is built around that discipline: accurate classification, the correct customs treatment for an EEA-but-not-EU destination, and a coordinator who tracks the consignment through every handover.
The UAE–Iceland freight corridor
We arrange and coordinate sea and air freight from the UAE into Iceland for commercial stock, project equipment, industrial goods, consolidated consignments and full containers. With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea cargo first goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman. Because no direct deep-sea service links the region with Iceland, sea freight is then consolidated through a northern European hub such as Rotterdam, where it transfers to a regular Iceland sailing arriving at Sundahöfn harbour in Reykjavík; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB enters through Keflavík (KEF) for time-sensitive cargo. The single most important point on this corridor is that Iceland, while part of the European Economic Area, is not in the EU customs union: clearing cargo into an EU port does not clear it into Iceland.
Sea freight
Cost-effective for larger volumes and bulk commercial consignments — full container or consolidated loads from the departure port through a northern European hub onward to Sundahöfn, with bonded storage available at the Reykjavík port if clearance is staged.
Air freight
For time-sensitive commercial cargo — high-value goods, urgent equipment or consignments that cannot wait on the multi-week sea routing — from DXB to Keflavík via a European hub.
Icelandic customs
Import declarations prepared and submitted to Skatturinn, Iceland Revenue and Customs — commodity codes, importer registration, valuation and supporting records done properly the first time.
Onward delivery
From Sundahöfn or Keflavík to the final commercial address — Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Akureyri or a project site elsewhere on the island.
Skatturinn and Icelandic import clearance
Commercial cargo entering Iceland is declared to Skatturinn, the authority responsible for both revenue and customs. Iceland applies its own customs tariff and its own value-added tax — a standard VAT rate of 24%, with a reduced rate on certain categories — and that VAT is generally recoverable for VAT-registered Icelandic businesses through the regular return. An Icelandic consignee registered with the tax authority is needed for cargo to clear in its name. Because the EU customs union stops at Iceland’s border, an EU customs transit document does not substitute for an Icelandic import declaration; the consignment is a separate import event and is treated as one.
Iceland’s EEA membership and its free-trade arrangements can give preferential or duty-free treatment to qualifying goods, but eligibility depends on the origin of the cargo and the supporting origin evidence travelling with the shipment — not on the route it took. We confirm the duty position with the correct origin documentation rather than assuming preferential treatment applies. For temporary movements — exhibition stock, demonstration equipment, professional tools coming in and going back out — an ATA carnet is often the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.
Why classification accuracy matters on this corridor
The commodity code assigned to your cargo determines the duty rate, the VAT base and any licensing or restriction that applies — and an incorrect classification surfaces as delays, back-duty, penalty interest and compliance friction that costs far more than getting it right at the outset. On an island corridor with multi-week transit and a hub transfer in the middle, a consignment held for a classification query is held a long way from home. We do not guess on classification; we confirm it before the cargo moves and document the reasoning so any later query from Skatturinn is answered straight from the file.
Bonded storage and staged clearance
For larger UAE shippers, bonded warehouse storage at the Reykjavík port keeps cargo in customs suspension until the goods are actually needed — useful when the Icelandic customer is not ready, when import VAT cashflow needs managing, or when a consignment will be released in stages. We coordinate the warehouse, the staged declarations and the onward delivery to the final destination, whether that is in the capital region or north to Akureyri.
How a commercial shipment runs
- Brief us. What is shipping, its commodity classification if known, value, weight and dimensions, the Icelandic consignee’s details, and when it needs to arrive.
- Quote and route. You receive a clear quote with the freight mode, the planned routing including the hub transfer, the Icelandic customs treatment, the origin and duty position, and any bonded or carnet options explained.
- Document and book. Icelandic import documentation is prepared for Skatturinn, origin and licensing evidence is collected, freight space is booked through the northern European hub, and the cargo is collected.
- Track to delivery. Your coordinator monitors the shipment through each handover, follows the Icelandic customs clearance by our destination partner, and confirms delivery at the final destination on the island.
Whether it is a single consignment or regular freight into Iceland, we route and document it properly — and we never assume an EU clearance carries across the Icelandic border. Request a freight quote and we will confirm the right approach for your cargo, the Skatturinn treatment, and any duty or VAT planning that applies.

Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Iceland take?
It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
