Freight routes & customs

Hong Kong is exceptionally well served. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, containers go by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sail from there to the Port of Hong Kong at Kwai Tsing; sea freight remains the cost-effective choice for full household volumes, with routing and dates confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB into Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok is a direct service of roughly eight hours, ideal when the timeline is pressing or the volume is modest.

Hong Kong is a free port with no general customs duty on most goods, so personal and household effects move with minimal import charges — a notable advantage of this corridor. Clearance is administered by the Customs and Excise Department, and a small number of categories such as liquor, tobacco and motor vehicles are dutiable or controlled. A clear valued inventory and standard import documentation are still required, and we prepare these in advance so clearance is straightforward.
