Moving to the United Kingdom

Pets & Vehicle Relocation to the United Kingdom

Relocating pets and vehicles from the UAE to the UK — compliant, coordinated, and folded into your wider move.

Two of the most anxious parts of a UK move are the ones that are not boxes at all: the family pet, and the car. Both are valuable, both are heavily regulated on entry to the UK, and both are easy to get wrong if treated as an afterthought. Seemleius coordinates pet and vehicle relocation on the UAE–UK corridor as a managed part of your move — not a separate worry.

Pet relocation to the United Kingdom

The UK has specific, strictly enforced requirements for animals entering the country — microchipping, vaccinations, documentation and approved travel routes. We coordinate with accredited pet-handling partners and align the animal’s journey with your household move, so timelines line up and nothing is left to the last minute.

Microchip, rabies and the Animal Health Certificate

The UK requires, in this order: a 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination; a rabies vaccination administered after the microchip; and an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or Great Britain Health Certificate (depending on documentation route) issued by an official veterinarian within 10 days of travel. Some animals also need treatment for tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) administered 24–120 hours before arrival in the UK — this applies to dogs and is mandatory regardless of country of origin. We map every date backwards from the planned arrival in the UK: AHC issue date, tapeworm treatment window, vaccination schedule, microchip lead time. Get one date wrong and the animal is turned back at the UK border. We do not let that happen.

Approved routes and animal welfare

Pets must enter the UK through a designated Traveller Point of Entry — certain airports (LHR is the primary one), seaports and Eurotunnel terminal. We book pet-appropriate travel on approved carriers (most commonly cargo hold on a direct flight from DXB), with crates sized and ventilated to IATA Live Animal Regulations standards. For older, anxious or brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds we discuss carrier suitability honestly — some breeds are restricted on certain airlines, and welfare considerations come before convenience. Pre-flight checks, in-flight monitoring where the carrier supports it, and UK arrival reception by a licensed handler are all part of the service.

Vehicle shipping: SVA, IVA and registration

Shipping a car or motorcycle to the UK is a chain that ends not at the port but at the DVLA. To register a foreign vehicle on UK roads it must pass through one of three routes: Mutual Recognition (for vehicles already type-approved to EU standards), Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) for vehicles that need a single-vehicle inspection, or for personal imports under specific conditions the Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) framework. Most UAE-sourced vehicles enter via IVA. We coordinate the freight (container shipping in 20′ or 40′ containers, with RoRo as an alternative for high-volume runs), import customs entry, NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrival) submission to HMRC, IVA appointment booking with DVSA, and V55/4 application to the DVLA for first UK registration of an imported vehicle.

Classic car exemptions and high-value handling

Classic vehicles over 30 years old enjoy a partial exemption: they can be registered as “Historic Vehicle” with reduced or zero VED (vehicle tax), and certain IVA requirements are relaxed where the vehicle is unmodified from original specification. The customs duty position depends on origin and ToR1 eligibility on the personal household move; we work this case-by-case. For high-value or sensitive vehicles — supercars, classics, collector pieces — we ship in dedicated containers with internal bracing and shock monitoring, photograph and condition-record the vehicle pre-loading, and arrange covered UK road delivery from the port. Saltwater exposure on a container deck is a real risk on a 25-day sea journey, and we mitigate it with proper crating, not luck.

How it works

  1. Tell us what is moving. The pet (species, breed, age) and / or the vehicle (make, model, year, VIN), plus your move dates.
  2. Plan the requirements. We map the UK’s entry requirements and timelines for each — AHC, tapeworm and rabies dates for pets; NOVA, IVA and V55/4 for vehicles.
  3. Coordinate the journeys. Travel and freight are booked, aligned with your household move, and condition-recorded before dispatch.
  4. Confirm arrival. You are kept informed through each journey to the UK, with handover and UK registration sign-off.

The earlier you tell us, the smoother both run — UK pet requirements and vehicle registration in particular reward early planning. Get in touch and we will walk you through it.

Common questions about this move

How long does a move to the United Kingdom take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
