Rwanda is a landlocked country, so the corridor is defined by what happens after the sea voyage: a coastal port, a customs transit, and a long inland road leg. It is a route we plan around rather than against, and one where Rwanda’s notably efficient customs administration works in the prepared mover’s favour.

Freight routes and customs

Sea freight departs Jebel Ali for the East African coast — typically the Port of Mombasa in Kenya or the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania — from where containers travel inland by road under customs transit to Kigali. Door-to-door transit for full-container household volumes generally runs 40 to 60 days given the inland leg. Air freight leaves DXB and connects into Kigali International Airport, the practical choice for tighter timelines and smaller consignments.

Customs is administered by the Rwanda Revenue Authority, which operates an efficient electronic clearance system. Returning residents and qualifying new arrivals can claim relief on used personal and household effects, subject to proof that goods were owned and used before the move. A detailed valued inventory, passport, visa or work-permit evidence, and transit documentation for the corridor port are all required. We prepare the RRA file and the transit paperwork in advance so the shipment moves cleanly from the coast to Kigali.

Who moves this route

The corridor serves households relocating full homes to Kigali, individual professionals on regional postings with part-container or air shipments, and businesses moving office contents or commercial freight for Rwandan operations.
