Monaco is small enough to walk across in an afternoon, and almost everything moving into it has to thread a narrow path to get there. The principality keeps no commercial seaport for household freight and no airport, so a container leaving Jebel Ali for a flat above Port Hercule lands first in France or Italy, clears the customs framework Monaco shares with France, and finishes on a short bonded road leg into Monte Carlo. We give you the vessel, the sailing reference and a working ETA the day after the survey — the standard a Monaco move runs on, built into UAE shipments across 22 years and 1,213 moves.

The residents on this corridor arrive for a specific reason: Monaco levies no personal income tax, and the people it draws tend to be relocating both a primary home and a degree of wealth. A family office partner taking an apartment in La Condamine, a fund principal settling a household, a yachting family basing the boat at Port Hercule — the volumes are often modest but the contents are not. Art, fine furniture, a serious cellar and pieces with real provenance need declared valuation, specialist crating and a quiet hand at the door, the part of this route that rewards care over speed.

Fine items crated to museum standard

Paintings, antiques, sculpture and a wine collection do not travel in a standard lift van. We build bespoke crates, climate liners and shock indicators around each piece, with a valued inventory and condition record drawn up before anything leaves the UAE residence.

A discreet, white-glove crew

Some moves are best done without an audience. The packing team is briefed on confidentiality and works to your timing, and a single coordinator — the coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator — holds the whole file so you speak to one person from survey to final placement.

Monaco access planned, not improvised

The principality’s streets are steep and tight, and a full-size truck rarely reaches the door. We arrange the access permit, hold the consignment at a coastal point, and shuttle it in on a vehicle sized for the address, with the lift or stair carry agreed beforehand with the building.

  1. Survey and valuation

A UAE survey or video walk-through measures volume in cubic metres and flags everything that changes handling or customs treatment — the art, the cellar, an antique that needs its own crate. We agree declared values for the high-value items at this stage, not at the quay.

  2. Documentation before sail

The transfer-of-residence file is drafted under French rules, with a full valued inventory, proof you are establishing residence in Monaco, and evidence the goods have been owned and used six months or more. The high-value pieces are itemised so the declaration matches the crate.

  3. Export pack and dispatch

Export-grade packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, fine pieces crated separately, ISPM-15 timber where needed. We book the sea rotation to Marseille, Nice or Genoa, or air from DXB to Nice when a date is fixed.

  4. Clear, shuttle and place

French customs is cleared at the port of entry with the relief applied, then the bonded road leg runs into the principality. The crew shuttles the consignment to the address, unpacks, reassembles and places the fine items, and removes every carton on the same visit.

The UAE–Monaco corridor in detail

Routing — why the box lands in France or Italy first

Monaco has no port that takes household containers and no runway, so the sea leg always finishes elsewhere on the coast and the last stretch is by road. From Jebel Ali the three working gateways are Marseille-Fos, the major French Mediterranean port at roughly sixteen to twenty days with the widest service from the Gulf; Nice, closer to the principality but lighter on direct rotations; and Genoa in Italy at around eighteen to twenty-two days, moving under bond west along the Ligurian coast into Monaco. Allow a few days on top of the sea figure for clearance and the road leg. Any quote that folds the road and border handling out of sight is hiding a real cost.

Air freight from Dubai via Nice

When a handover date is fixed before a container can realistically arrive, air closes the gap. DXB to Nice Côte d’Azur is the natural air gateway, roughly thirty minutes by road from Monaco, and a clean file clears on the ground in a working day. From Nice the last leg is a short coastal drive, or for some clients a helicopter transfer into the Monaco heliport at Fontvieille. Many of these moves split the shipment — priority air for the pieces wanted first, sea for the bulk — under one transfer-of-residence umbrella.

French and EU customs, and transfer-of-residence relief

Monaco sits inside a customs union with France, so goods entering the principality are handled under the French and EU customs framework and cleared through the Direction Générale des Douanes. For a household arriving from the Gulf the working basis is transfer-of-residence relief under French rules: used personal effects enter free of duty and import VAT where they have been owned and used six months or more, the owner has lived outside the EU and is establishing primary residence, against a complete valued inventory and proof of the residence change. New, boxed or commercial goods sit outside the relief, which is why valuation and ownership history are settled before the container sails rather than at the frontier.

Art, wine and valuation

The high-value end of a Monaco move is where the real work sits. Paintings, sculpture, antique furniture, jewellery and wine each carry their own declared valuation, and the customs treatment turns on provenance and ownership history as much as on the figure itself. A serious cellar is inventoried bottle by bottle and declared rather than buried in a carton; a painting travels in a crate built to its dimensions with a condition report; an antique is wrapped to conservation standard. Where a piece needs an export consideration or a valuer’s note, we arrange it ahead of dispatch.

Monaco access — streets, permits and the shuttle

Delivery inside the principality is a logistical exercise in its own right. The streets are steep, narrow and often one-way, parking is controlled, and a forty-foot truck cannot reach most addresses, so the consignment is broken to a smaller vehicle and shuttled in. A delivery permit is arranged with the Monaco authorities, a time slot agreed, and where a building has a service lift its dimensions are checked against the largest crate beforehand. For an upper floor with no goods lift, an external hoist or a staged stair carry is planned in advance.

Pets

Cats and dogs travel under EU pet rules, the same standard that applies across the French border: an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU health certificate from a UAE government-authorised vet close to departure, which together amount to the EU pet passport equivalent on arrival. The live-animal leg is handed to a specialist IPATA agent, usually routing through Nice, with the dates lined up so the family and the pet arrive in step.

Restricted goods

Some things travel only with a permit, and some not at all. Firearms and certain weapons need French authorisation; wine and spirits beyond a personal allowance are declarable and may carry duty, so a cellar is costed rather than chanced; plants need phytosanitary clearance; and new boxed electronics read as commercial. Cultural goods and certain antiques can need paperwork in their own right. We mark all of it at survey, to avoid a hold at Marseille or Genoa over an item that should simply have been declared.

What a Monaco move costs from the UAE

Three things shape the price, and we itemise each. The sea leg to Marseille, Nice or Genoa is the base freight, set by volume and the rotation booked; the bonded road leg and the Monaco shuttle are a genuine separate line — the access permit, the smaller vehicle and any hoist a direct-port corridor never carries; and the fine-item handling, the bespoke crating and conservation packing, is priced against the pieces themselves. A one-bedroom on a shared container sits well below a full residence taking a dedicated forty-foot box. Every quote separates freight, road, customs, crating and packing.

Private residence

Emirates Hills to a Monte Carlo apartment

A family establishing Monaco residency, moving a household that included a small collection of paintings and several pieces of fine French furniture. The coordinator agreed the declared values at survey, had each painting crated to its dimensions with a condition report, and routed the bulk through Marseille while the art went by air into Nice. The transfer-of-residence file lodged against the Monaco residence proof, and the permit and shuttle held the narrow street outside the building for the delivery window.

Family office

DIFC to a La Condamine household

A family-office principal relocating from Downtown Dubai with a fixed apartment handover near Port Hercule. The coordinator split the consignment — priority air to Nice for the working setup, a sea container via Genoa for the rest — both cleared under one transfer-of-residence file, with a modest cellar declared bottle by bottle rather than risk a frontier hold. The service lift was measured against the largest crate beforehand, and the flat was in order the week the family arrived.

Yacht-linked move

Dubai Marina to a Fontvieille base

A yachting family basing the boat at Port Hercule for the season and taking an apartment in Fontvieille, with part of the consignment for the residence and part for the vessel. The coordinator routed the household through Marseille, kept the yacht-bound equipment on a separate manifest so the commercial and personal items did not blur at customs, and timed the Fontvieille delivery around the access the building allowed. Both ends landed inside the same week.

★★★★★

We were moving a house we had spent fifteen years filling, paintings included, into a Monte Carlo apartment a third of the size. The coordinator agreed the values for the art before anything was touched, crated each piece individually, and flew them into Nice while the rest came by sea. Nothing was rushed, nothing was on display in the street, and the condition reports matched on arrival.

A family-office move into La Condamine with a wine collection I genuinely cared about. The coordinator declared the cellar properly instead of hoping it passed quietly, which is exactly the honesty you want on a move like this. The container came through Genoa, the lift was measured against the crates beforehand, and the whole thing stayed discreet from the first call to the last carton.

Ms. Charlotte D. Family office · January 2026 — La Condamine
★★★★☆

The household side was handled beautifully. The one snag was the street access in Fontvieille — the permit slot was an hour shorter than the carry needed, so the last boxes came up the following morning. The coordinator was straight about why and had the second slot arranged before I had to ask. Not flawless on the day, but honest about it and quick to put it right.

Frequently asked questions — Monaco corridor

Do I qualify for transfer-of-residence relief?

If you are establishing your primary residence in Monaco, have lived outside the EU, and the goods have been owned and used six months or more, used personal effects can enter free of duty and import VAT under French rules. New, boxed or recently bought items sit outside it. The relief rests on a complete valued inventory and proof of the residence change, which we prepare before the container sails.

How long does a move to Monaco take when there is no Monaco port?

The sea leg from Jebel Ali runs about sixteen to twenty days to Marseille and around eighteen to twenty-two to Genoa, with a few days on top for clearance and the bonded road leg into the principality. Air from DXB to Nice is the fast option, on the ground in a working day for a clean file, then a short coastal drive into Monaco.

Which port should the container route through?

Marseille-Fos carries the widest service from the Gulf and is the usual default; Nice sits closest to Monaco but has lighter direct rotations; Genoa in Italy suits an Italian rotation and runs west along the coast under bond. We pick the gateway that fits your volume and timeline and tell you which we have booked.

Why does the move clear French customs rather than Monaco customs?

Monaco is in a customs union with France, so the French and EU framework applies and the entry is filed with the Direction Générale des Douanes at the port of arrival. There is no separate Monaco border formality once the goods are cleared into the union; the last leg into the principality runs under bond.

How is art and high-value handling managed?

Each painting, sculpture, antique or piece of jewellery carries its own declared valuation, agreed at survey, and travels in a crate built to its dimensions with a condition report attached. Provenance and ownership history matter to the customs treatment as much as the figure, so we settle the documentation before dispatch.

Can a removal truck reach my address in Monaco?

Usually not directly. The streets are narrow and steep and parking is controlled, so the consignment is held at a coastal point, broken to a smaller vehicle and shuttled in under a delivery permit arranged with the Monaco authorities. Where a building has no goods lift, a hoist or staged stair carry is planned ahead of the day.

How do my pets get to Monaco?

Under EU pet rules: an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU health certificate from a UAE government-authorised vet close to departure, which together stand as the pet passport equivalent on arrival. The animal usually routes through Nice with a specialist IPATA agent, timed to the household move.

What will not ship?

Firearms and certain weapons without French authorisation, plants without phytosanitary clearance, and new boxed electronics treated as commercial. Wine and spirits above a personal allowance are declarable and may carry duty, and some cultural goods or antiques need paperwork of their own. We flag all of it at survey.

How far ahead should I book?

Four to six weeks before dispatch is comfortable for a full residence, and a little longer where art and valuation work are involved, since the crating and the documentation reward the runway. We can move faster on air and a fixed handover date, but the high-value file is better unhurried.

Who handles the Monaco end?

One coordinator — the coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator — owns the file from the UAE survey through the French clearance to the shuttle and final placement inside the principality. The French broker, the inland haulier and the Monaco delivery crew all answer to that single point, so you are never passed between vendors.
