Bringing a pet to Ireland

The UAE is treated as an unlisted (third) country under EU pet travel rules, which means animals arriving in Ireland from Dubai or Abu Dhabi go through the full third-country regime rather than the lighter intra-EU scheme. The core obligations are well defined and the sequencing is strict; the timelines are not flexible. • ISO-compliant microchipping — implanted before the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination needs to be repeated

The Irish tapeworm requirement — a detail that catches people out

Dogs arriving in Ireland from outside the EU require a tapeworm treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis, administered by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving at the Irish port of entry, and recorded on the Animal Health Certificate. Ireland is one of only a handful of EU member states that retains this requirement (along with Finland, Malta and Norway), and it is in addition to the standard EU pet travel rules. It is the kind of detail that catches people out at the last moment because the timing window is tight and depends on the actual arrival schedule rather than the departure schedule. Shipping a vehicle to Ireland — VRT, NCT and the change-of-residence relief

Importing a vehicle to Ireland involves several Revenue and Road Safety Authority requirements that go well beyond the freight booking. The headline charge is VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax), an Irish-specific tax calculated on the vehicle’s open-market selling price in Ireland and adjusted by CO2 emissions and NOx bands — for a typical mid-size SUV it can run into thousands of euro. The vehicle must be registered with the National Car Testing Service (NCTS), which operates VRT inspection centres, within seven days of arrival in Ireland and registered within thirty days. From four years after first registration, the vehicle is also subject to NCT (National Car Test) roadworthiness inspections every two years.

Where the move qualifies as a genuine change of normal residence from outside the EU, the Transfer of Residence relief from VRT may apply — sometimes called MUL or DUL relief in older documentation, formally now “Change of Residence” relief under the Vehicle Registration Tax (Permanent Reliefs) Regulations. The conditions are specific: the vehicle must have been owned and used by you outside the EU for at least six months before the move, must continue to be owned by you for at least twelve months after registration in Ireland, and the relief must be claimed at the VRT inspection appointment with the supporting documentation (proof of foreign residence, proof of ownership, evidence of the move). VAT may still apply depending on the age and the EU-origin status of the vehicle.
