The family pet and the car are the two things that generate the most questions — because both are governed by EU entry rules that are specific, non-negotiable, and not always obvious from the outside. Pet relocation to Czechia

Czechia applies the European Union’s rules for pets entering from a third country, and the UAE is a third country in EU terminology. The requirements are not unreasonable, but they are time-sensitive: each step must be completed in the correct order, and some carry mandatory waiting periods. Miss a step or get the sequence wrong, and the animal cannot enter the EU.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Czechia is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then the primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been implanted — never before — followed by a rabies antibody titration blood test (the FAVN test) taken at an EU-approved laboratory at least thirty days after vaccination. After a successful result, a mandatory three-month wait applies from the date of the qualifying blood draw before the animal may enter the EU. An EU animal health certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian shortly before travel, and the animal must enter the European Union through a designated travellers’ point of entry, where the documentation is checked.

Once in Czechia, dog ownership is registered at municipal level and a local dog tax applies, with the amount set by each town or city. We brief you on the registration step that applies in your destination municipality so nothing is missed after arrival.

Vehicle shipping to Czechia

Shipping a car from the UAE to Czechia involves far more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, a technical inspection, and Czech registration — and because Czechia is landlocked, the vehicle is delivered by road or rail after arriving at a European port. We handle the logistics chain and ensure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward about the duty, tax, inspection and registration costs so there are no surprises on arrival.

The customs treatment of the vehicle depends on whether it qualifies for the EU transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle owned and used by the owner for at least six months before the move, and which the owner will continue to use in Czechia, can generally be imported under that relief and exempted from the EU import duty and Czech VAT. The vehicle is declared alongside the household goods on the same transfer-of-residence application. Without the relief, duty and VAT are payable on the customs value of the car.

Once cleared, a vehicle that did not originally meet EU type approval must pass a Czech technical inspection — the technická kontrola at an authorised STK station — together with an emissions check, before it can be registered. UAE-specification headlights, side markers and emissions equipment frequently need adjustment or replacement to meet European standards. After the inspection, the vehicle is registered at the local vehicle registry office: road tax and compulsory third-party liability insurance are arranged, and Czech licence plates are issued.
