Pet relocation to Croatia

Croatia applies the EU’s third-country pet entry rules, which are detailed and consistently enforced. For animals travelling from the UAE — a third country in EU terminology — the requirements are not unreasonable, but they are sequence-dependent: each step has to be completed in the correct order, and some steps carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Get the sequence wrong and the animal cannot enter at the Croatian border.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Croatia is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then the primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been implanted — never before — followed by a rabies antibody (FAVN) blood test at an EU-approved laboratory taken at least thirty days after that vaccination. A mandatory three-month wait then applies from the date of the qualifying blood draw before the animal can enter the EU. An EU animal health certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian within ten days of travel, and the animal must enter Croatia through a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry where the documentation is checked.

On arrival, dogs in Croatia must be registered in the national pet register and licensed with the local authority, and rabies vaccination must be kept current under Croatian veterinary rules. We brief you on the registration steps and any local requirements that apply in your destination city.

Vehicle shipping to Croatia

Shipping a car from the UAE to Croatia involves considerably more than the freight leg. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, a Croatian roadworthiness inspection and the registration process — and we handle the logistics chain while keeping you informed on the duty, inspection and registration costs so there are no surprises on arrival.

The treatment of the vehicle at Croatian customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle that has been owned and used by the owner for the qualifying period before the move, and that the owner will continue to use in Croatia, can usually be imported under that relief and exempted from the EU import duty and Croatian PDV (VAT). The vehicle is declared alongside the household effects as part of the transfer-of-residence application. Without the relief, duty and VAT are payable on the assessed customs value, and we set out that position clearly before the car is shipped.

Once the vehicle has cleared customs, it must pass a Croatian technical inspection (tehnički pregled) at an authorised station, which confirms it meets Croatian roadworthiness, lighting and emissions standards. Vehicles built to UAE specification sometimes need adjustments — headlight alignment, rear fog lamps and other lighting details — to pass. After the inspection, the car is registered at the relevant authority: the registration is completed against the owner’s OIB, third-party insurance is arranged, road tax and registration fees are settled, and the Croatian plates and registration documents are issued.
