Freight routes and customs

Sea freight from Jebel Ali is the practical choice for household and commercial volumes. Containers sail into the Indian port of Kolkata or Haldia, where goods clear in transit before being trucked north through Phuentsholing, Bhutan’s main land gateway on the Indian border. Door-to-door transit usually falls in a 35 to 55 day range depending on sailings, Indian transit clearance and the road leg. Air freight from DXB routes via an Indian hub into Paro International Airport — the only international airport — and suits documents and small urgent cargo only.

Clearance is handled by Bhutan’s Department of Revenue & Customs. Incoming residents and returning nationals can import used personal and household effects with transfer-of-residence relief, subject to a valued inventory and proof of prior ownership and use. Because goods pass through India in transit, Indian customs transit documentation must also be in order. We prepare both sets of paperwork before the container sails so neither border holds the shipment.
