Pet relocation — the DAFF protocol from the UAE

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) governs animal imports into Australia. The UAE sits in the approved-country group for cat and dog imports, which means animals can travel directly to Australia from Dubai provided the full pre-export protocol is completed correctly. The headline requirement is the Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) — a blood test confirming the animal has a sufficient rabies antibody level, processed by a DAFF-approved laboratory. From the date the sample is taken (with a valid result), there is a minimum 180-day — six month — wait before the animal can enter Australia. This is non-negotiable and is the single biggest planning factor for a pet move on this corridor.

Once the animal arrives in Australia, mandatory quarantine begins at the Post-Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility at Mickleham, near Melbourne. The standard quarantine period is 10 days. Bookings at Mickleham must be made well in advance — capacity is finite and is reserved months ahead. Breed restrictions are strict: certain dog breeds — including dogo Argentino, fila Brasileiro, Japanese tosa, American pit bull terrier and Perro de Presa Canario — are banned outright from entry, and crosses involving these breeds face significant scrutiny. Vehicle import — PIA, VIA and the Australian compliance regime
