Moving to Malaysia
Malaysia draws UAE movers through MM2H residency, a lower cost of living and a welcoming expat culture. Seemleius runs the sea and air corridor into KL, Penang and Johor Bahru.

The move from the UAE to Malaysia has a character unlike most other corridors we run. It is rarely driven by a single corporate posting or a mandatory transfer. More often it is a considered choice — a family deciding the cost of schooling, housing and everyday life in Kuala Lumpur makes more sense than in Dubai; a semi-retired couple qualifying for the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) long-stay programme and making the leap; a regional business choosing Malaysia as an ASEAN base where overheads are lower and talent is available at a different point on the cost curve. The move tends to be deliberate and, often, permanent.
That character shapes how we run the corridor. This is not a rushed executive transfer — it is usually a well-considered relocation that warrants a thorough plan. Below you will find how the UAE–Malaysia move works and links to guides built for your specific situation.
The corridor in practice
Malaysia is served from the UAE by both sea and air freight, and the two modes complement each other well on this lane. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, sea containers go by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sail from there into Port Klang — the country’s main container gateway, sitting on the Strait of Malacca west of Kuala Lumpur — with routing and dates confirmed at the survey. Penang Port (Butterworth) serves the north, and the deep-water hub at Tanjung Pelepas in Johor handles shipments heading to Iskandar or southern Peninsular Malaysia. Air freight operates Dubai (DXB) direct to Kuala Lumpur International Airport in around seven hours, used for priority items, time-sensitive corporate equipment or split shipments where essentials travel ahead of the main household.
The Malaysian customs framework is administered by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) and runs through the uCustoms electronic clearance platform, which has streamlined the import process considerably for shippers whose paperwork is correctly prepared in advance. The headline import taxes are Sales and Service Tax — Sales Tax, generally at 5% or 10%, on taxable imported goods and an 8% Service Tax that applies to certain services — alongside HS-code specific import duty rates. We classify, value and document every shipment to clear cleanly the first time.
Where in Malaysia you are headed
Kuala Lumpur & the Klang Valley
The capital and main corporate hub — from KLCC, Mont Kiara, Bangsar and Damansara Heights to the broader Klang Valley, the most common destination from the UAE.
Penang
George Town’s heritage, the island’s lifestyle and a lower price point make Penang a consistent draw for lifestyle movers, retirees and the semiconductor industry.
Johor & Iskandar Puteri
Proximity to Singapore makes Johor Bahru and the Iskandar zone a practical base for those working across the Causeway while living at Malaysian cost levels.
Beyond the cities
Gated communities, hill retreats and emerging areas — we deliver to addresses across Peninsular Malaysia, not just the urban centres.
Residence status and customs relief
The visa and residency status sitting behind a Malaysia move drives much of the customs treatment, so we get clear on it at the survey stage — whether you are moving on the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, an Employment Pass or as a Malaysian returning home. We document the shipment to support any exemption that applies to you; residence and visa questions themselves sit with the official Malaysian authorities.
How a move to Malaysia runs
- Survey and plan. Our coordinator assesses what is moving, discusses your Malaysian destination, visa class and timeline, and recommends the right freight mode — sea for full households via Port Klang, air via DXB–KUL for priority items.
- Document for Malaysia. UAE export and Malaysian import documentation is prepared, including the full written inventory RMCD uses for customs assessment and the uCustoms declaration package.
- Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard with a full written inventory; the shipment goes by sea on the booked routing, or from DXB by air, on dates planned around your arrival.
- Clear and deliver. Our destination partner handles RMCD clearance, the SST assessment and any duty, then delivers, unpacks and reassembles at your address in KL, Penang, Johor or beyond, with your coordinator in Dubai as the single point of contact.
