Freight routes and Jordanian customs

Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, sea freight goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sails from there to Aqaba, Jordan’s only seaport, on the Red Sea coast in the south of the country — routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. From Aqaba, goods move overland to Amman and the northern cities. Air freight from DXB into Queen Alia International Airport near Amman is a short hop, usually clearing within days, and suits smaller or time-sensitive shipments. An overland road option via Saudi Arabia is also available for certain consignments.

The Jordan Customs Department applies the country’s import rules and offers relief for returning residents and new arrivals. Used household goods and personal effects that were owned and used before the move may qualify for exemption from customs duty, provided the inventory, ownership evidence and residence or visa documentation are in order. We prepare a detailed packing list and the supporting paperwork in advance so your shipment is correctly classified as a transfer of residence.
