Origins and transit times by region
Honest bands matter more than optimistic ones, because the gap between them is where stress lives. By sea from the UK and wider Europe into Jebel Ali, plan on roughly three to five weeks port to port; from India, closer to two to three weeks; from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the Philippines, again around three to five weeks depending on the rotation and transhipment. Add a few days at the UAE end for clearance and the road leg to your door. Air is the fast lane for a curated load or the things you cannot be without — typically three to seven days, origin depending. Jebel Ali by sea or DXB by air

Air into Dubai International (DXB) or Al Maktoum (DWC) suits a part-load, a tight start date, or high-value items you would rather not have at sea for a month. Many people split the two — a small air shipment of essentials to live on from day one, and a sea container following with the rest.
UAE Customs, duty and your residence visa
Dubai Customs clears imports through the Mirsal 2 electronic system. Used personal effects and household goods, declared as a genuine relocation and documented properly, are generally treated leniently — the standard UAE import duty of around 5% applies to many goods, but bona-fide used household effects belonging to someone establishing residence usually attract little or no duty when the file is complete. What unlocks that treatment is your status as a resident: clearing personal effects typically needs a valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID in your name, alongside a passport copy and the packing inventory. So timing is not a side issue. If your visa is mid-process when the container sails, we either pace the shipment to match or arrange short bonded storage at Jebel Ali so nothing has to clear before you can legally claim it. Brand-new goods in retail packaging and commercial quantities are assessed differently, so we flag those at the survey.
Restricted and prohibited items — the honest list
The UAE holds a firmer line than many origins, and it is far cheaper to know before you pack than to argue at the port. Alcohol is restricted and tied to licence and allowance rules rather than something you ship freely in a household consignment. Pork and pork products are not permitted. Some medications sold over the counter or routinely prescribed in the UK, Europe, India or Australia are controlled substances here — check anything you rely on before it travels, and carry prescriptions for what you bring personally. Dubai areas, the heat and delivery
Where you are landing shapes the delivery as much as where you came from. Apartment handovers in Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai, JBR and Business Bay mean booking the building's loading bay and service lift; villa deliveries in Arabian Ranches, Jumeirah and Mirdif, or across to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, are more about access and timing. The other factor is the climate. Summer heat and humidity make it worth scheduling the unpack for the cooler part of the day where we can, and not leaving a container standing in the sun longer than it must.
