Freight routes & customs

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight is trucked to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sails from there to Durban, the major South African port that serves Eswatini-bound cargo; the sailing, any transhipment and the dates are confirmed at the survey. From Durban, goods move by road to the Eswatini border and on to Mbabane or Manzini. Air freight routes from Dubai International (DXB) via Johannesburg to King Mswati III International Airport (SHO), suited to urgent or compact shipments.

Customs is handled by the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS). Because Eswatini is part of the Southern African Customs Union, cargo is processed in transit through South Africa and then formally entered in Eswatini. Imported personal effects require a detailed inventory, passport and residence documentation, and a values declaration; returning residents may claim relief on used household goods under transfer-of-residence rules.
