Freight routes & customs

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight first goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and routes via a transhipment hub — commonly a larger Caribbean port such as those in Trinidad — before a feeder service brings the container into the Woodbridge Bay port at Roseau, Dominica’s main commercial port. Transit is long — routing and dates are confirmed at the survey — and sea is the practical choice for full household volumes. Air freight from DXB connects through a US or Caribbean gateway into Douglas–Charles Airport (DOM) for urgent or smaller consignments.

Customs is administered by the Customs and Excise Division. Returning nationals and new residents may import used household goods with relief from import duties under transfer-of-residence and returning-resident provisions, subject to a detailed inventory, proof of prior ownership and residence documentation. As an island that guards its environment closely, Dominica screens agricultural and plant-based items carefully. We prepare every document before the shipment sails.
