Moving to Bahamas

Freight routes and customs

Nassau on New Providence is the main commercial port for household freight, while Freeport on Grand Bahama is one of the largest transhipment hubs in the region. There is no direct sea service from the Gulf. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, containers travel by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, then transship — commonly through a European port or the Freeport hub itself. Routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB into Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau routes via a North American or European connection and suits urgent or smaller consignments.

Customs is handled by the Bahamas Customs & Excise Department. Incoming residents can generally import used household goods, with relief available to returning residents and to qualifying permanent residents and homeowners, subject to a detailed valued inventory and proof of residency status. We prepare the documentation in advance so the shipment is assessed correctly on arrival.
