Freight routes and customs

Albania’s main maritime gateway is the Port of Durrës, the largest port in the country and the natural discharge point for household sea freight. Since February 2026, with the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping, containers first travel by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sail from there, either directly or through a Mediterranean hub such as Gioia Tauro or Piraeus; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. From Durrës onward road delivery reaches Tirana in under an hour. Air freight from DXB routes into Tirana International Airport (Nënë Tereza), usually via a European connection, and suits urgent or smaller consignments.

Customs is handled by the Albanian Customs Administration (Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Doganave). Returning residents and incoming foreign nationals can generally import used household effects under transfer-of-residence relief, provided the goods have been owned and used before the move and a valued inventory accompanies the shipment alongside proof of residence. We prepare this documentation in advance so the consignment is assessed correctly at Durrës.
