Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, a container for Spain goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sails from there for Valencia or Algeciras, with Barcelona usually a later call; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Once the sailing is booked, we hand you the vessel name, the booking reference and the carrier’s estimated arrival. That is the standard a move to Madrid, the Costa del Sol or the Catalan coast runs on, and it is the standard behind our 22 years’ experience and 1,213+ moves delivered.
The people we carry into Spain fall into a few recognisable groups. There is the family swapping an Emirates villa for one above Marbella, the remote professional landing in Barcelona with a tight start date, the couple retiring to a finca on the Costa Blanca after a working life in the Gulf, and the executive joining a Spanish operation in Madrid, Bilbao or Valencia. Each has a different cargo and a different deadline. What they share is a Spanish administrative sequence — the NIE, the customs declaration, the residence registration — that has to fall in the right order, or the shipment waits.
Why move with Seemleius
Mudanza relief claimed correctly
Spanish transfer-of-residence relief (mudanza) exempts used personal effects from duty and the 21% IVA, provided you have owned and used them six months or more and are establishing residence here. We assemble the inventory, the residence evidence and the address proof before the box sails.
DUA lodged to match the box
Customs at the Spanish port runs on the DUA, the single administrative document filed with the Agencia Tributaria. When the declared value and the inventory disagree, the container stops. We check the file against the inventory before the box sails, and our destination partner lodges the DUA, so it reads true the first time.
NIE-aware scheduling
Your NIE has to be in hand before customs will release a personal-effects shipment in your name. We plan the shipment around that, and around your lease or completion date, so the paperwork can be ready before the goods arrive.
How your move works
-
Survey and brief
An in-person survey across Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, or a guided video walk-through, with volume measured in cubic metres and anything that changes its customs treatment flagged. Sea and air options come back against your Spanish start date and your lease or completion date.
-
Documentation before sail
The mudanza file is built with a Spanish-language inventory, your NIE, the residence visa or permit, UAE deregistration evidence and proof of the new address. ICS2 entry data is filed for the EU leg.
-
Export pack and dispatch
Export-grade packing from the Emirates, ISPM-15 treated timber where the crating calls for it, and a booked rotation to Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras — or air out of DXB to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Málaga when the schedule will not wait.
-
Clearance and delivery
DUA lodged at the port by our destination partner, mudanza relief claimed, container devanned and trucked inland. The partner's crew unpacks, reassembles the larger furniture and clears the debris on the same visit.
The UAE–Spain corridor in detail
Sea and air routes
Sea freight lands at four working gateways. Valencia is one of the Mediterranean's busiest container ports and the natural entry for Madrid, the eastern seaboard and most household traffic. Algeciras, across the bay from Gibraltar, is the closest deep-water port to the Costa del Sol and suits a Marbella or Málaga delivery. Barcelona serves Catalonia and the north-east, usually a later call on the schedule. Bilbao is the Atlantic option for the Basque Country and the northern industrial belt. Air from DXB reaches Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga in around seven to eight hours, and is the route for a part-shipment that has to be in place before the sea container catches up.
The DUA, the NIE and mudanza relief
Spanish customs is administered by the Agencia Tributaria through its Departamento de Aduanas, and the working document is the DUA — the documento único administrativo lodged at the port of entry. For UAE household goods the relief that matters is mudanza, the transfer-of-residence exemption that lifts both import duty and the 21% IVA from used personal effects. To qualify, the goods are owned and used for six months or more, you have been resident outside the EU, and you are moving your normal residence to Spain and claiming within the period the rules allow. The application leans on a Spanish-language inventory, proof of prior residence abroad, proof of the new address and your NIE — and the NIE has to exist before clearance, because the declaration is filed in your name. New boxed goods, commercial stock and certain vehicles fall outside the relief and are dutiable. Get the file right before the vessel sails and the box clears cleanly; get it wrong and it waits in the port at demurrage.
Used cars, the ITV and what cannot ship
A used car can travel, but Spain wants it roadworthy and re-registered before it can drive legally. That means the ITV (the inspección técnica de vehículos, Spain's roadworthiness test), import tax assessed on the vehicle, and registration with the DGT under Spanish plates. The economics only work for a car genuinely worth importing, and we will say so plainly at the survey. As for what does not ship: firearms and most regulated blades need a licence and rarely qualify, alcohol above personal quantities is dutiable, plants and seeds need phytosanitary clearance, and anything new and boxed reads as commercial. We flag all of it before packing rather than at the quayside.
Pets to Spain
Pets enter under the rules overseen by the Spanish agriculture ministry. A dog or cat needs an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU-format health certificate from an official UAE vet inside the pre-departure window. We coordinate the booking with an IPATA-registered pet agent and time the animal's arrival in Madrid or Barcelona to sit alongside the household delivery rather than ahead of an empty home.
Residence paperwork and timing
Whatever brings you to Spain, the residence paperwork shapes the freight plan. The customs declaration is made in your name and mudanza relief rests on showing that you are moving your normal residence here, so the NIE and residence documents have to be far enough along by the time the container berths. Where a start date is tight, a part-air, part-sea split lets the working essentials land first. For the visa or residence application itself, follow the official guidance of the Spanish consulate or embassy; we then plan the move backwards from your confirmed dates.
Industrial corridors and pricing
Commercial and corporate cargo runs into the same ports but onto different ground. Madrid anchors finance, headquarters and logistics; Barcelona pulls technology, design and pharmaceuticals; Bilbao and the Basque belt hold heavy engineering; Valencia pairs its port with ceramics, agriculture and a growing tech base. Pricing builds from volume, route, freight mode, customs treatment and the access at the delivery address — a top-floor flat in central Barcelona is not a villa with a driveway near Marbella. Every quote itemises freight, customs, haulage and packing, with no line folded into another to look tidier than it is, and transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available with terms confirmed in your quote.
Dubai Hills to a villa above Marbella
A family of five leaving a Dubai Hills villa for a home above Marbella, with a fixed completion date and two children starting at a new school. The coordinator schedules the packing around the completion date and the school term, prepares the mudanza file with the family’s NIEs and proof of the new address before the container leaves, and routes the sea freight into Algeciras for the short road leg to Marbella.
Abu Dhabi to a Barcelona apartment
A software lead moving to an apartment in Barcelona with a fixed start date. The coordinator splits the move — air freight to Barcelona for the desk, monitors and a fortnight of essentials, and a sea shipment behind it for the rest — and gives both consignments the same inventory references, so the DUA and the mudanza claim read as one coherent move.
Arabian Ranches to the Costa Blanca
A couple retiring to a townhouse near Alicante after two decades in the Emirates, downsizing from a large villa and parting with a good deal along the way. The coordinator walks them through what will and will not fit before anything is packed, plans the sea freight into Valencia with a short road leg down the coast, and schedules the delivery so each room is set up in turn rather than everything stacked in a hallway.
Frequently asked questions — Spain corridor
What is mudanza relief and do I need my NIE for it?
Mudanza is Spain's transfer-of-residence relief. It lifts import duty and the 21% IVA from used personal effects you have owned and used for six months or more, where you are moving your normal residence to Spain and claim within the allowed period. Your NIE has to exist before clearance, because the customs declaration is filed in your name — so we make sure it is in hand before the container berths.
Will I pay Spanish customs duty on my belongings?
On used household goods that qualify for mudanza relief, no — neither duty nor IVA. The relief is what keeps a normal home move duty-free. New goods still in their boxes, commercial stock and items outside the six-month ownership rule are dutiable, which is why we separate them on the inventory rather than letting them surprise you at the port.
Algeciras, Valencia or Barcelona — which port?
It follows your delivery address. Valencia is the default for Madrid and the eastern half of the country. Algeciras is closest to the Costa del Sol, so it usually wins for Marbella and Málaga. Barcelona serves Catalonia and the north-east. Bilbao is the Atlantic entry for the Basque Country.
Can I ship my UAE car to Spain?
You can, but it has to pass the ITV roadworthiness test, have import tax assessed and be re-registered with the DGT on Spanish plates before it is legal to drive. That only makes sense for a car genuinely worth importing, and we will give you an honest read at the survey rather than book it blindly.
Does my residence paperwork change the shipment?
It changes the timing more than the freight. The box is cleared in your name and mudanza relief needs proof that you are moving your normal residence to Spain, so your NIE and residence documents need to be far enough along before the container berths. If your start date is tight, a part-air, part-sea split lets the working essentials land first.
How do pets travel to Spain?
A dog or cat needs an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU-format health certificate from an official UAE vet inside the pre-departure window. We arrange the flight through an IPATA pet agent and time the arrival to land with your household, not before it.
What will not ship to Spain?
Firearms and most regulated blades without a licence, alcohol above personal quantities, plants and seeds without phytosanitary clearance, and anything new and boxed that customs treats as commercial. We flag every one of these at the survey so nothing is packed that should not be.
How long does the move take door to door?
Sailings now start after a road leg to the departure port, and schedules are longer and less predictable than before 2026, so the sea routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Add a few working days for DUA clearance, then one to two days of inland road delivery. Air from DXB is on the ground in seven to eight hours, plus a working day or so to clear. A full container is comfortable booked four to six weeks out.
Who handles the Spanish end of the move?
Our destination partner in Spain lodges the DUA, clears the shipment and delivers it to your address. One coordinator in Dubai owns the move from the UAE survey through to the delivery in Spain and stays your single point of contact throughout.
Do you handle Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca lifestyle moves?
Regularly — Marbella, Estepona and Málaga on the Costa del Sol, Alicante and the towns around it on the Costa Blanca, and Mallorca across the water. These moves often involve real downsizing from a Gulf villa, so we spend time at the survey on what is worth bringing.
