Spain sits among the largest economies in the European Union and runs a customs operation that is methodical rather than forgiving. Commercial cargo that arrives at Valencia or Barcelona with a questionable classification or an incomplete file is set aside until the paperwork is right. For UAE businesses shipping into Spain, that means the documentation work belongs at the front of the process, before the cargo moves. Seemleius commercial cargo and freight on the UAE–Spain corridor is built around that principle: accurate classification, complete documentation, and a coordinator who tracks the shipment through every handover.
The UAE–Spain freight corridor
We arrange and coordinate sea and air freight from the UAE into Spain for commercial stock, machinery, industrial goods, consolidated consignments and full containers. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping in February 2026, containers go by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sail from there into Valencia, Barcelona, Algeciras or Bilbao, with the routing and dates confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB to Madrid is roughly seven to eight hours direct, with cargo capacity into Barcelona and Zaragoza as well. Spain’s role as an EU point of entry is a genuine advantage where cargo needs to reach several European markets — clearing customs at a Spanish port releases the goods into the whole EU customs territory, simplifying onward movement into France, Portugal and beyond.
Sea freight
Cost-effective for larger volumes and bulk commercial consignments — full container or consolidated loads by sea into Valencia, Barcelona, Algeciras or Bilbao, with bonded storage at the port where onward clearance is staged.
Air freight
For time-sensitive cargo — high-value goods, urgent equipment or consignments that cannot wait on sea transit — direct from DXB into Madrid and Barcelona.
Spanish customs & EORI
Spanish import documentation prepared and submitted to the AEAT — HS classification, EORI registration, valuation and supporting records done properly the first time.
Onward road delivery
From the Spanish port or airport to the final commercial address — anywhere in Spain, or onward into wider Europe under T1/T2 transit where required.
Spanish customs, the AEAT and EORI
Spanish import clearance is handled by the Departamento de Aduanas within the Agencia Tributaria (AEAT), and every commercial importer needs an EORI number — the Economic Operators Registration and Identification number — valid for the EU before cargo can clear in its name. The standard Spanish import VAT (IVA) rate is 21%, applied on top of any duty, and is recoverable by VAT-registered businesses through the regular return. There is no EU–UAE trade agreement in force, so goods of UAE origin pay the standard EU duty rate. Some importers also use the deferred import VAT scheme, which lets the IVA be accounted for on the VAT return rather than paid at the border, easing cashflow.
Where cargo is destined onward into other EU countries, or needs to move under duty suspension to a bonded warehouse, we use the T1 (external transit) and T2 (internal transit) procedures so import VAT and duty settle at the correct point in the chain. For temporary movements — exhibition stock, demonstration equipment, professional tools that will return to the UAE — an ATA carnet is usually the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.
Why classification accuracy matters on this corridor
The HS code assigned to your cargo sets the duty rate, the VAT base, and any restrictions, licensing or controls that apply. A misclassification can mean delays, back-duties, penalty interest and a compliance record that costs far more than getting the code right at the outset. We do not guess at classification — we confirm it before the shipment moves and document the reasoning so any later AEAT query is answered straight from the file.
Bonded warehousing and staged clearance
For larger UAE shippers, bonded warehouse storage at Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras holds cargo in customs suspension until the goods are actually needed — useful when the inland customer is not ready, when IVA cashflow needs managing, or when a consignment is to be split across several onward destinations. We coordinate the warehouse, the staged clearance and the inland trucking to Madrid, Seville, Bilbao and elsewhere.
How a commercial shipment runs
- Brief us. What is shipping, its HS classification if known, the value, weight and dimensions, the Spanish consignee’s EORI, and when it needs to arrive in Spain.
- Quote and route. You receive a clear quote with the freight mode, the planned routing, the customs and duty treatment, and any T1/T2 or bonded options explained.
- Document and book. Spanish customs documentation is prepared, the AEAT declaration is built, origin and any licensing evidence is collected, vessel or aircraft space is booked and the cargo collected.
- Track to delivery. Your coordinator monitors the shipment through each handover, follows the Spanish customs clearance by our destination partner, and confirms delivery at the final Spanish destination — or onward into the EU under transit.
Whether it is a single consignment or recurring freight into Spain, we route and document it properly. For the wider picture of this route, see our guide to moving from the UAE to Spain. When you are ready, request a freight quote and we will confirm the right approach for your cargo, the EORI and AEAT treatment, and any duty or VAT planning that applies.

Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Spain take?
It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
