Customs is administered by the national customs service, the Direção das Alfândegas, under the Ministry of Finance. Returning residents and qualifying new arrivals may claim relief on used personal and household effects, subject to proof that goods were owned and used before the move. A detailed valued inventory, passport and visa or residence documentation are required, with paperwork prepared in Portuguese.
