Freight routes and customs

As the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight goes by road to a port outside it, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and routes from there to the Indian port of Kolkata or Haldia, then moves overland by bonded transit to the Birgunj dry port — Nepal’s main inland customs point — before final delivery. Routing and dates are confirmed at the survey, and sea remains the cost-effective option for full household volumes. Air freight from DXB flies direct to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, suited to urgent or smaller shipments. Clearance is handled by the Department of Customs under Nepal’s Ministry of Finance. Returning Nepali nationals and arriving residents may claim used-household-goods relief, which requires a detailed inventory, proof of overseas residence and a passport showing time abroad — we prepare this package before the shipment departs.
