Because the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, containers first go by road to a port outside it, such as Khor Fakkan on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, then sail for the Maldives Ports’ commercial harbour at Malé, sometimes via a regional transhipment hub; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB into Velana International Airport is fast — the flight itself is roughly four to four and a half hours — and is the natural choice for urgent or smaller consignments, typically clearing within one week. From Malé, onward delivery to other islands is arranged by domestic sea or air transfer.

Customs clearance is administered by Maldives Customs Service. Used personal and household effects may receive concessionary treatment when accompanied by a detailed inventory and evidence of prior ownership and use, though duty and procedures should always be confirmed for the specific consignment.
