Malta sits at the centre of the Mediterranean shipping map, and that is no accident of geography — the Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk is one of the region’s largest transshipment hubs, handling container traffic for the whole basin. For UAE businesses shipping commercial cargo into Malta, that infrastructure is an advantage, but it does not remove the discipline the move requires. Cargo that arrives incorrectly classified or with incomplete documentation gets held, and on an island the cost of a delay compounds quickly. Seemleius commercial cargo and freight on the UAE–Malta corridor is built around getting the preparation right before anything moves.

The UAE–Malta freight corridor

We arrange and coordinate sea and air freight from the UAE into Malta for commercial stock, equipment, industrial goods, consolidated consignments and full containers. With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight is trucked to a port outside the strait, such as Fujairah or Khor Fakkan on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and shipped on to the Malta Freeport, whose transshipment role means frequent connections; routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB into Malta International Airport is the option for time-sensitive cargo, usually routed via a connection rather than a daily direct freighter. Malta’s status as an EU point of entry is a genuine strategic asset — clearing customs at Marsaxlokk clears the goods into the entire EU, which simplifies onward distribution into Italy, the wider Mediterranean and mainland Europe.

Sea freight

Cost-effective for larger volumes and bulk commercial consignments — full container or consolidated loads into the Malta Freeport, with bonded storage options if onward clearance is staged.

Air freight

For time-sensitive commercial cargo — high-value goods, urgent equipment or consignments that cannot wait on sea transit — from DXB into Malta International Airport via established connections.

EU import documentation

Maltese customs entries prepared properly — HS classification, EORI registration, valuation and supporting records done correctly the first time, within the EU customs framework.

Onward delivery

From the Freeport or the airport to the final commercial address anywhere on Malta or Gozo, or onward into the EU under transit procedures where required.

EU customs, EORI and import VAT

Malta applies the EU customs framework, and every commercial importer needs an EORI — Economic Operators Registration and Identification — number before cargo can clear in its name. Maltese standard VAT is charged on imports on top of any duty, and it is recoverable for VAT-registered businesses through the regular VAT return. Goods of UAE origin are charged the standard EU duty rate, since there is no EU–UAE trade agreement in force. Because Malta has no land border, every commercial entry is a sea or air entry, which actually simplifies the clearance picture — there is one point of arrival and one customs interface to manage.

For cargo destined onward into other EU countries, or goods that need to move under suspension to a bonded warehouse, we use the EU transit procedures — T1 for external and T2 for internal transit — so duty and import VAT are settled at the correct point in the chain. For temporary movements such as exhibition stock, demonstration equipment or professional tools, an ATA carnet is often the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.

Why classification accuracy matters on this corridor

The HS code assigned to your cargo determines the duty rate, the VAT base, and any applicable restrictions or licensing. An incorrect classification can result in delays, back-duties, penalty interest and compliance complications that cost far more than getting it right at the outset. We do not guess on classification — we confirm it before the shipment moves and document the reasoning, so any subsequent query from Maltese customs is answered straight from the file rather than reopened from scratch.

Bonded storage and staged clearance

For larger UAE shippers, bonded warehouse storage near the Freeport keeps cargo in customs suspension until the goods are actually needed — useful when the local customer is not ready, when VAT cashflow needs managing, or when a consignment will be split across several onward destinations. We coordinate the warehouse, the staged clearance and the final-mile delivery across Malta and Gozo, including the ferry leg where the destination is on Gozo. Given the island’s finite yard and storage space, planning the clearance and storage sequence in advance is not optional — it is what keeps the cargo moving.

How a commercial shipment runs

  1. Brief us. What is shipping, its HS classification if known, value, weight and dimensions, the Maltese consignee’s EORI, and when it needs to arrive.
  2. Quote and route. You receive a clear quote with the freight mode, the planned routing, the customs treatment, the origin-certificate position if applicable, and any transit or bonded options explained.
  3. Document and book. Maltese customs documentation is prepared, the import entry is built, origin and any licensing evidence is collected, vessel or aircraft space is booked, and the cargo is collected.
  4. Track to delivery. Your coordinator monitors the shipment through each handover, manages customs clearance with our destination partner at the Maltese point of entry, and confirms delivery at the final destination — or onward into the EU under transit.

Whether it is a single consignment or regular freight into Malta, we route and document it properly — and if you are weighing up the wider picture, the Malta corridor overview sets out how the route works. Request a freight quote and we will confirm the right approach for your cargo, the EORI and customs treatment, and any duty or VAT planning that applies.

Common questions about this move

Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.

Contact us
How long does a move to Malta take?

It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
