Freight routes and customs

Sea freight is the standard choice for household and commercial volumes. Because the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, containers leave by road for a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sail into a regional port — commonly Tema in Ghana, Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, or Lomé in Togo, the established gateways for Burkinabè cargo — before the overland leg north to Ouagadougou. Routing and dates depend on sailings, port handling and the road leg, and are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB routes via a hub into Ouagadougou’s international airport and suits documents and time-critical cargo.

Clearance is handled by the Direction Générale des Douanes. Incoming residents and returning nationals can import used personal and household effects with relief under transfer-of-residence provisions, subject to a valued inventory and proof of prior ownership and use abroad. Because cargo transits a neighbouring country, transit documentation for the gateway must also be correct. We prepare both sets of paperwork before the container sails so the shipment is not held along the corridor.
