Moving to Somalia

Somalia occupies the Horn of Africa, with one of the longest coastlines on the continent, and the corridor from the UAE is a busy one. Somalia is reached primarily by sea through Mogadishu and the northern port of Berbera, and by air into the main cities. Connectivity with the UAE is well established — the Gulf is one of Somalia’s closest trading partners — but customs and on-the-ground coordination still need careful handling. Preparing paperwork that matches the shipment, and choosing the right port of entry, keeps the move on track.

Freight routes and customs

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight goes by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and sails from there for the Port of Mogadishu or the Port of Berbera, depending on the destination region, sometimes routed via a regional transhipment hub. Dates depend on the service and port and are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB into Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, or into Hargeisa, is the faster option, generally clearing within one to three weeks and suiting smaller or urgent consignments.

Customs is handled by the relevant customs authorities at the port of entry. Returning residents and incoming households can generally seek relief on used personal and household effects, supported by a detailed inventory, passport and proof of the move. New goods, vehicles and commercial cargo are assessed separately. We prepare and verify the declaration in advance and confirm the requirements for the chosen port before the shipment sails.
