When UAE families ask what is most complicated about a move to Slovakia, it is rarely the furniture. The family pet and the car are the two things that generate the most questions — because both are subject to EU entry requirements that are specific, time-sensitive and not always obvious from the outside, and because Slovakia is landlocked, so neither simply arrives at a port. Seemleius coordinates both as a managed part of your move on the UAE–Slovakia corridor. The earlier you raise them, the better the outcome.

Pet relocation to Slovakia

Slovakia applies the EU’s rules for pets entering from a third country, and for animals travelling from the UAE those rules are detailed and strictly enforced. The requirements are not unreasonable, but they are sequential: each step has to be completed in the correct order, and some carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Miss a step or get the order wrong, and the animal cannot enter the EU.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Slovakia is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then a primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been implanted — never before — and a wait of at least 21 days after a first vaccination before the animal may enter. No rabies antibody blood test is needed, because the UAE is on the EU’s list of third countries for pet travel. An EU animal health certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian close to travel, and the animal must enter the EU through a designated traveller point of entry, where the documentation is checked. Where the pet flies into Vienna as the gateway, entry into the Union takes place there before the short onward transfer into Slovakia.

Once in Slovakia, dogs are generally registered with the local municipality, and many towns and cities levy a local dog tax — the amount and the rules vary from one self-governing region and municipality to the next. We brief you on what applies in your destination so registration is handled without friction.

  • UAE microchip and rabies vaccination planned early, so the 21-day wait after a first vaccination is covered before travel
  • EU animal health certificate issued in the UAE within the required window before departure
  • Approved air route from DXB into a designated EU traveller point of entry, via Bratislava or Vienna, with handlers who understand EU animal welfare standards
  • Guidance on local dog registration and the municipal dog tax that applies in your Slovak town or city

Vehicle shipping to Slovakia

Shipping a car from the UAE to Slovakia involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, a technical inspection and Slovak registration — and because the country is landlocked, the vehicle is shipped to a European port and then carried inland. We handle the logistics chain and ensure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward about the duty, registration and inspection costs so there are no surprises on arrival.

The treatment of the vehicle at Slovak customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle owned and used by the owner at the previous residence — normally for at least six months before the move — and which the owner will continue to use in Slovakia can usually be imported under that relief and exempted from the 10% EU import duty and Slovak VAT, currently 23%. The relief is applied for alongside the household goods. Without it, duty and VAT are payable on the customs value of the car.

Once cleared, an imported vehicle must pass a technical and emissions inspection — the technická a emisná kontrola at an authorised station — and, where the car was not built to EU type approval, an individual approval process that confirms it meets European technical, lighting and safety standards. UAE-specification headlights, side markers and emissions equipment frequently need adjustment or replacement to pass. The vehicle is then registered at the district vehicle registration office (the dopravný inšpektorát): Slovak plates are issued, the registration certificate is produced, motor third-party liability insurance is put in place, and any motor tax position is settled. We set out each of these steps in advance, so the car can be made road-legal after it arrives.

  • Container freight, or roll-on roll-off where a sailing is available, booked to an Adriatic or northern European port from a departure port outside the Strait of Hormuz, with the inland leg into Slovakia arranged on top
  • UAE export and EU import documentation prepared — including the transfer-of-residence relief application for the vehicle where it qualifies
  • Technical and emissions inspection, and individual approval where required, coordinated after clearance, with guidance on the modifications UAE-spec vehicles typically need
  • District registration office formalities, plates, registration certificate and insurance set out in advance, so the car can be made road-legal after it arrives

How it works

  1. Tell us what is moving. The pet (species, breed, size) and / or the vehicle (make, model, year, current emissions specification), plus your anticipated move dates.
  2. Map the requirements. We set out the EU entry sequence for the pet and the import, inspection and registration sequence for the vehicle — including lead times and waiting periods that cannot be compressed.
  3. Coordinate the journeys. Pet travel via an approved DXB route and vehicle freight by sea and the inland leg are booked and aligned with your household shipment so arrivals are sequenced sensibly.
  4. Keep you informed. Your coordinator updates you through each stage — UAE vet appointments, EU clearance, the inspection appointment, registration office formalities — and you can ask for an update at any point.

EU pet entry requirements in particular reward early action — a first rabies vaccination starts a 21-day wait before the pet can travel, and there is no mechanism to shorten it. For the wider corridor — routing, customs and what arrival involves — see our moving to Slovakia guide. Get in touch as soon as you have a move date and we will map out the full timeline for both.

Common questions about this move

Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.

Contact us
How long does a move to Slovakia take?

It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
