The Strait of Hormuz has been closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, so containers go by road to a port outside it, such as Sohar in Oman or Khor Fakkan and Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast, and route from there via a major transhipment hub before the leg into Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific coast or Puerto Barrios and Santo Tomás de Castilla on the Caribbean side. Several connections are involved, so the routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight runs from Dubai International (DXB) via a connecting hub to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, suited to urgent or compact shipments.

Customs is handled by the Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria (SAT). Imported personal effects require a detailed inventory, passport and residence or visa documentation, and a values declaration — paperwork is generally expected in Spanish. Returning residents and those relocating may be eligible for relief on used household goods under transfer-of-residence provisions, assessed on the supporting documents.
