Freight routes and customs into Colombia

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, containers first travel by road to a port outside the strait, such as Khor Fakkan or Fujairah on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman. Sea freight then commonly sails to Colombia’s Caribbean ports — Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta — generally via a transhipment hub, with routing and dates confirmed at the survey; the Pacific port of Buenaventura also serves the country. From the port, goods move inland by road, including the climb to Bogotá and Medellín. Air freight from DXB routes via a connecting hub into El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá (BOG) and is the faster choice for urgent or smaller consignments.

Customs clearance is handled by the Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN). Returning residents and new arrivals may claim relief on used household effects under transfer-of-residence (menáje doméstico) provisions, subject to a detailed valued inventory, passport, visa documentation and proof of prior ownership. We prepare the declaration in the UAE so the file is consistent when the shipment reaches Colombian customs.
