Moving to Morocco

Freight routes and Moroccan customs

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to commercial shipping since February 2026, sea freight is trucked to a port outside the strait, such as Fujairah or Khor Fakkan on the UAE’s east coast or Sohar in Oman, and shipped to Casablanca, Morocco’s principal commercial port, or to Tanger Med, the large Mediterranean transhipment hub near Tangier. It is the cost-effective choice for full household volumes, and routing and dates are confirmed at the survey. Air freight from DXB connects, often via a hub, into Casablanca Mohammed V Airport or Marrakesh Menara, with door-to-door timelines of around one to two weeks when the schedule is pressing.

Moroccan customs is administered by the Administration des Douanes et Impôts Indirects (ADII). Individuals transferring their residence to Morocco — including returning nationals — can import used personal effects with relief from import duty and tax, subject to prior ownership and use and to proof of residence transfer. A detailed, valued inventory is required. We prepare the customs file before departure.
