When UAE families ask what is most complicated about a move to Hungary, it is rarely the furniture. The family pet and the car generate the most questions — because both are subject to EU entry rules that are specific, time-sensitive and not always obvious from the outside. Seemleius coordinates both as a managed part of your move on the UAE–Hungary corridor. The earlier you raise them, the better the outcome.
Pet relocation to Hungary
Hungary applies the EU’s third-country pet entry rules, which are detailed and strictly enforced. For an animal coming from the UAE — a third country in EU terminology — the requirements are not unreasonable, but they are sequential: each step must be completed in the correct order, and some steps carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Miss a step or get the sequence wrong, and the animal cannot enter at the EU border.
The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Hungary is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then the rabies vaccination after the chip is in place — never before — and, after a first (primary) vaccination, a wait of at least twenty-one days before the animal may enter the EU. The UAE is one of the third countries listed under the EU pet travel rules, so no rabies antibody (titre) blood test and no three-month wait are required. An EU Animal Health Certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian within ten days of travel, and the animal must enter through a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry where the documentation is checked.
Once in Hungary, dog owners register the animal with the local municipality, and many districts — Budapest among them — levy a local dog tax. Hungary also requires dogs to carry an ISO microchip as a matter of national law, which the EU entry chip satisfies. We brief you on the registration and any local rules that apply at your destination.
- UAE microchip and rabies vaccination sequenced in the right order, with the twenty-one-day wait after a first vaccination planned into the travel date
- EU Animal Health Certificate issued in the UAE within ten days of departure
- Approved air route from DXB into an EU Travellers’ Point of Entry — Budapest where direct, otherwise via another EU entry airport — with handlers who understand EU animal welfare standards
- Guidance on Hungarian municipal dog registration and local dog tax where it applies
Vehicle shipping to Hungary
Shipping a car from the UAE to Hungary involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, a Hungarian technical inspection and the registration process — and because Hungary is landlocked, the vehicle is shipped to a European port and then moved overland for the final leg. We handle the logistics chain and make sure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward about the duty, registration and inspection costs so there are no surprises on arrival.
The treatment of the vehicle at NAV depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A car owned and used by the owner for at least six months before the move, brought as part of a genuine transfer of normal residence to Hungary, can usually be imported free of the EU import duty and the 27% Hungarian import VAT. Without that relief, duty and VAT are payable on the assessed customs value — and at 27% VAT, the difference is significant, so the eligibility check matters.
Once cleared, a vehicle that was not originally type-approved for the EU goes through an individual technical inspection in Hungary to confirm it meets European technical, emissions and safety standards. UAE-specification headlights, side markers and emissions equipment frequently need adjustment or replacement to pass. After the inspection, the vehicle is registered with the Hungarian authorities: the registration document and number plates are issued, the registration tax and motor vehicle tax are assessed, and compulsory third-party insurance must be in place. We set out the inspection and registration steps in advance, so the car can be made road-legal after it arrives.
- Container freight, or roll-on roll-off where a sailing is available, booked from a port outside the Strait of Hormuz into a northern European or Adriatic port, with the overland leg into Hungary arranged
- UAE export and NAV import documentation prepared — including the transfer-of-residence relief application for the vehicle where the relief applies
- Hungarian technical inspection coordinated post-clearance, with guidance on the modifications typically required for UAE-spec vehicles
- Hungarian registration, plates, registration tax and motor vehicle tax explained in advance, so the car can be made road-legal after it arrives
How it works
- Tell us what is moving. The pet (species, breed, size) and / or the vehicle (make, model, year, current emissions specification), plus your anticipated move dates.
- Map the requirements. We set out the EU entry sequence for the pet and the import, inspection and registration sequence for the vehicle — including lead times and waiting periods that cannot be compressed.
- Coordinate the journeys. Pet travel via an approved DXB route and vehicle freight by sea are booked and aligned with your household shipment so arrivals are sequenced sensibly.
- Keep you informed. Your coordinator updates you through each stage — the pet’s UAE health paperwork, EU customs clearance, the inspection appointment, Hungarian registration — and you can ask for an update whenever you need one.
EU pet entry requirements in particular reward early action — for a pet that needs a first rabies vaccination, the twenty-one-day wait that follows fixes the earliest possible travel date, and there is no way to shorten it. Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Hungary take?
It depends on the freight mode, the volume and the routing, which your coordinator confirms at the survey along with a realistic window — sea freight is the economical choice for a full household, air freight is faster for essentials.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes, with our destination partner: we prepare the export paperwork in Dubai, and clearance at the destination is handled by our partner there. Some countries ask you to apply for duty relief yourself — your coordinator tells you what to file and when.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance (all-risk cover) is available. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting, and the terms are confirmed in your quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Yes — one coordinator in Dubai looks after your move from the survey to delivery and works with our destination partner, so you are never passed between companies.
