Pet relocation from the UAE to Australia is the longest, most paperwork-heavy move we coordinate. Australia's biosecurity regime is the strictest in the world, and the timeline is unforgiving — miss a single test window and you reset months of planning. This is the realistic six-month roadmap our Dubai coordinators walk every pet-owning family through, with the specific dates and documents that actually matter.
Month minus six: the decision to move
The first task is confirming your pet is medically eligible. Australia accepts cats and dogs from approved Group 3 countries; the UAE sits in Group 3, which means the route is open but the protocols are demanding. Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, French bulldogs, Persian cats) are not banned but face airline restrictions during the Gulf summer, so a December-to-March move window is strongly preferred for snub-nosed pets.
Book a first appointment with a Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) accredited veterinarian in Dubai. There are only a handful in the country — in our experience, clinics in Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Abu Dhabi Khalifa City carry the accreditation. The vet will scan or implant an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip, which becomes the anchor identifier for every subsequent test.
Month minus six to minus five: rabies vaccination and titer
Even though the UAE is not a rabies-free country, the DAWE protocol still requires a fresh rabies vaccination administered after microchip implantation, followed by a rabies neutralising antibody titer test (RNATT) at a DAWE-approved laboratory. The blood draw must happen at least three to four weeks after the vaccination booster.
The titer sample is shipped to an approved lab. The UAE does not yet host one, so samples typically travel to Australia, Germany or the United States. Results take three to five weeks. The pet cannot enter Australia until 180 days have elapsed from the date of the successful titer blood draw — this is the immovable clock that drives everything else.
Month minus four: the waiting period and prep
This is the quietest phase. The 180-day wait is non-negotiable, so use the time to:
- Book the quarantine reservation at Mickleham, the only post-arrival facility in Australia. Slots fill four to six months out, especially around Australian school holidays.
- Source an IATA Live Animal Regulations (LAR) compliant crate sized correctly for your pet. The pet must be able to stand, turn around and lie down naturally.
- Crate-train daily. Two to four weeks of positive-reinforcement crate exposure significantly reduces transit stress.
- Confirm airline routing. Emirates SkyCargo handles most DXB-Melbourne pet movements; Qantas Freight is the alternative via Singapore or Hong Kong. Direct DXB-MEL is preferred.
Month minus three to minus two: import permit application
The Australian import permit application opens 42 days before arrival. The permit is issued in your pet's name and ties to a specific quarantine reservation date. Get this in early — the BICON system has been busy through 2025 and 2026 and the assessment window has stretched to ten business days in our experience.
While the permit is being processed, complete the secondary tests: internal and external parasite treatments at the schedules specified (45 days, 30 days, 21 days, 14 days and 5 days before flight, depending on which treatment), plus the official health certificate signed by the DAWE-accredited vet.
Month minus one: the final ten days
This is the most intense stretch and the easiest place for paperwork errors to derail the move. Inside the final ten days:
- Final veterinary examination within five days of export
- UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment export endorsement — processed in Dubai, typically two to three days
- Final parasite treatments witnessed and recorded
- Crate inspection and seal at the DXB Animal Hotel
- Pre-flight conditioning — light meal twelve hours before, normal water access until two hours before
Arrival, quarantine and release
Pets arrive at Melbourne and are transferred directly to Mickleham Post-Entry Quarantine. The minimum stay is ten days. During this period, DAWE conducts final health assessments and reviews documentation. Visits to your pet are not permitted, but the facility provides daily welfare updates and most clients receive a photo within 48 hours.
If everything is in order, the release happens on day ten or eleven. We arrange ground transport from Mickleham to your Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Perth address. The reunion at the new home is, by every account, immediate and joyful — pets recognise their families instantly despite months of separation logistics.
What the timeline actually costs
For one medium-sized dog (15 to 25 kilograms) from Dubai to Sydney or Melbourne in 2026, the realistic all-in cost lands between AED 26,000 and AED 34,000. This includes vet fees, titer lab costs, import permit, IATA crate, air freight, quarantine fees and final delivery. Cats run roughly 30 per cent lower. Two animals travelling together share some fixed costs and come in well below double a single-pet move.
The single piece of advice we give every family on this corridor: do not start packing the household goods until the rabies titer result is in hand. Everything else flexes. That date does not.
